To find the persistent 80s really frightening

Its frightening me how stuck our world is in the 80s.. its 40 years ago!. . ie its like in the 80s all commercial radio, tv , shops all being 1940s war songs.. but in the 80s it was mostly 80s music too! ...

AIBU to think that loads of the country are like psycholohically stuck in a scary mental time-fix??? even the christmas songs are the same!!!

Because the 80s were awesome. And also not 40 years ago.

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 26/12/2016 17:38

They weren't 40 years ago.

HTH.

scaryclown · 26/12/2016 17:39

Christ Scary, if only we WERE stuck in the eighties. The 20-teens suck arse, never has there been a more uptight, overthinking, dull and bewildered society.

scaryclown · 26/12/2016 17:40

oh ok mathos 30-36 years ago..meh

DancingDragon · 26/12/2016 17:40

Its not 40 years ago, its erm, 37. Nearly. Bloody hell, thats a really long time ago

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/12/2016 17:40

Erm the 80s weren't 40 years ago and, considering most 'music' today is shit, I'm quite happy to stay in a 'scary mental time fix' (whatever that is!)!

hefzi · 26/12/2016 17:40

Where are you shopping? Genuinely never heard eg Dame Vera Lynn on the High St!

YesThisIsMe · 26/12/2016 17:41

It's because the people who were teenagers in the eighties are now in their forties and at the peak of their power and influence in the pop culture establishment. Twenty years ago it seemed that The Beatles' status as unquestioned Greatest Band Ever and eternal icon of what pop should be would last forever. Then it was Bowie and punk. Now it's the eighties.

Gallavich · 26/12/2016 17:42

It's fashion, there are no original ideas so fashion always looks backwards. Hardly stuck in a time warp.

pipsqueak25 · 26/12/2016 17:45

because modern 'music' is shite and noone will know who half of the so called singers from now are in a few years.
many people nowadays are entitled, whingy and anally retentive with their stupid fb and wanna be famous shite, and don't get me on so called celebs.

HardLightHologram · 26/12/2016 17:46

Those few years are very important when you're in your late 30s but not yet 40...

In the 80s , I was a teenager, thin ( size 8, proper sized eight not vanity sized 8)
I wore those jeans that you lay on the floor and did the zip up then got numb hip-bones.
I did my hair and make-up like the Human League (girls, not Phil Oakey)

And there was the promise of good things.
I miss the 80s.
I am old (50)

And yes the music was fab.
Simple Minds "I Travel"
Bruce Sprinstein "Dancing in the Dark"
Japan
Haircut 100
The Associates "Party Fears Two"

I feel the urge to plunder YouTube now

loads of commercial stations have been playing the 80s for three decades

The80sweregreat · 26/12/2016 17:53

I loved the 80s music but it was mostly a fashion disaster if my dodgy perms were anything to go by. Clothes were expensive and not that flattering!
Not good for lots of people though. Lots of unemployment and Mrs Thatchers politics.
I remember they were always trying to bring the sixties back then ( everyone going on about how good that was) its always gone on this nostalgia business im afraid.

Sparklingbrook · 26/12/2016 17:55

The 80s was the best decade. I wish we were still stuck in it.

Sadly things are very different now. But the music endures. Because it was the best.

scaryclown · 26/12/2016 17:55

I am also doing a shit job and the banter is like from the 80s same scripted teasing.. same 'its only one day' christmas shite, and with the 80s soundtrack its just like being at bloody school. i am going to get highlights just so i can get the 'haha did a pigeon shit on you' ..er..'banter' i'm waiting to be asked if i liked wham or duran duran next week... its like a japanese horror movie
