Baby had underarm temp of 36.1 at around 3pm and is not at 36.3.

Google is telling me various different things about what underarm temp should be in a 12 week old and he's been ill recently.

He's a bit cranky but feeding OK.

I'd say over 37.5/ 38 is a temp (nurse and Mum of 3 here)

It's worth testing temp when baby is well to get an idea of their general norm though

As long as feeding and weeing okay, 'seems okay' I wouldn't worry

No, if anything he's cold. 37 is Normal body temperature

I can recommend getting a bum thermometer. They are easy to use and very accurate.

Last time I went with 'my instincts' he was actually pretty unwell. I don't feel like I cn trust them any more.

Low 36es was always normal underarm temp for my DD. Definitely worth measuring when he's well, jay so you know.

36.4 is what I've always understood to be "optimum" temp. As pp have said, 37.5/38ish is a fever.

I've always been told (as recently as 2 days ago by a consultant) that it's not always what's on the thermometer that matters, if your child isn't behaving normally, not eating/drinking, floppy or unrousable they are better indicators to how ill they are.

DD can have a fever of 39 and still be running around happy as anything but DS reaches 37 and he's flat out.

An in-ear electric thermometer is easier to use than a rectal one as you don't need to undress them (especially handy at night) and they usually tolerate it better.

Oh god. Just realised I think I've been sticking what should either be an oral or rectal thermometer under his blimmin armpit.

Does anyone have this kit, and if so how do you use the thermometer?

Have just been eyeing up a nice in-ear one on amazon. Maybe Santa will bring me one.

There's an underarm one that goes green amber or red according to temperature, with three age settings.

The blurb for that says it's an oral one. I would get an ear one. Don't think I'd use a rectal one

Definitely get an ear one. I've had a hankering for a laser-y one though...

36.4 is spot on for ear temp.

My GP uses the Braun thermoscan. We've got one too - old model. Very reliable. But as kids have got older I am more confident at just feeling their forehead or going by kissing their forehead.

Ear ones are much easier.

Why were you taking his temperature? What else seems 'wrong'?

I googled this to death when mine were newborn as ear one I have didn't fit them. The underarm one says to add 0.6 I believe but even then your baby's temp is fine if you add 0.6 to the readings given.
