Nativity portrayal of Dwarves

Just been to see this years school play, Snow White. Very good, lots of effort gone into it and the kids all enjoyed themselves.

I was a bit taken aback when the seven dwarves came out though as they paraded round the stage several times walking on their knees.

I'm interested to know whether I am being unreasonable to think in this day and age children should not be encouraged to imitate a disabled group of society.

Do you have a better suggestion?

ChristmasTreats · 20/12/2016 20:20

The costumes made it obvious enough imo.

The nativity is the story of the birth of Christ. There are no dwarves. You mean pantomime.

(helpful)

Sirzy · 20/12/2016 20:22

I think that's pretty normal for dwarves in any play TBH. Can't say it would cross my mind to be offended, it's simply a way to highlight the height difference between characters.

Sparklingbrook · 20/12/2016 20:23

Yes, the dwarves need to be shorter then Snow White.

Alabastard · 20/12/2016 20:26

Did the dwarves arrive before or after the wise men?

SaucyJack · 20/12/2016 20:26

IDK.

Where dwarves named after dwarfs, or is it the other way round?

RancidOldHag · 20/12/2016 20:26

Did the dwarves bring good frankincense and earphones?

Or was it a play/pantomime, not a nativity?

Dwarves need to be portrayed as shorter than characters who are meant to be adult-sized, which must be tricky when they're all primary age. But they don't, really don't need to be in the Nativity at all.

EdithWeston · 20/12/2016 20:28

We had aliens in a nativity one year

(helpful?)

ChristmasTreats · 20/12/2016 20:30

No wise men but they had kings, our school like to mix it up. After the initial parade they stood up as if it had never happened and walked around normally.

Maybe IABU it just made me uncomfortable and felt like a piss take.

Rosae · 20/12/2016 20:31

Would it be better if they picked all the short kids?

Mistoffeleze · 20/12/2016 20:35

I piss take of what? The 7 dwarves?

I don't see a problem with mixing together two made up stories like the nativity story and Snow White. After all they did it with Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.

I think they ABU for making little kids walk around on their knees, it really bloody hurts.

sonjadog · 20/12/2016 20:37

I agree with you OP. Walking on knees was unnecessary.

But most importantly - what part did the dwarfs play on this version of the nativity?

VladmirsPoutine · 20/12/2016 20:40

I agree with you. Yes the disney film has nothing to do with the birth of Jesus but that's not the point is it.
The costumes alone should illustrate the dwarves. It's just another example of casual disablism in my view.

hazeyjane · 20/12/2016 20:45

I wouldn't like it either to be honest.

northernmonkey1010 · 20/12/2016 20:50

As a man with achondroplasia (dwarfism) I find this hilarious but I know some people with the community would hate it.

JosephineMaynard · 20/12/2016 20:51

How did they work the birth of baby Jesus into the Snow White story?

But I would wonder why they couldn't pick shorter kids as dwarves or just have tall dwarves, if the costume wasn't enough, rather than have the dwarves walking around on their knees.

PurpleDaisies · 20/12/2016 20:53

This reminded me of a story o say recently. There's an issue with tall actors taking jobs from dwarfs...

That's surprisingly accurate Bean so I guess if I was religious I would have been offended by the plot instead, they can't win really.

So many things to get offended about these days. I still don't understand why drag seems to acceptable but things like this are questioned.
