To think this is a really weird secret santa gift?

Dd2 (13) did a secret santa with her class. The limit was £1 so it was never going to be anything extravagant. She went to the pound shop and bought a box of chocolate biscuits as her gift. They exchanged gifts this morning and she's just text me to say she received... Toilet cleaner Hmm

Dd is generally well liked and she says she gets on with the girl who bought it for her. I'm just a bit confused as to why this girl thought this is something dd would like

I think it's a horrible present but do you think the present giver thought it was funny? even though it's not

Jinglebells99 · 12/12/2016 09:07

That is bizarre. Maybe the girl thought it round be a joke. Maybe that's all she had lying around the house. I think it must be a joke. I hate secret Santa. I remember in my first office job trying to find a secret Santa present for a middle aged woman in my office. I was only in my early twenties and ended up buying a tiny ornament, I think, can't remember exactly. I overheard her slagging it off for days afterwards.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 12/12/2016 09:09

YNBU. That's very strange. There are so many brilliant things in the pound shop that she could have bought for her. For example A soap set, chocolates, a book, jewellery, nail varnish.
On a humorous note though . I can just picture your dd's WTAF face, on opening the present.

chickenowner · 12/12/2016 09:18

I would think that it was meant as a joke - although it's very strange and not funny! Your poor DD.

Grumpyoldblonde · 12/12/2016 09:21

Yeah, I would say that it was just a bad joke {I got washing up liquid once)

I think school Secret Santas with named choices are bad for exactly this reason.

My DD's class do one where everyone buys a gift that is to suit girl or boy and each child has to just go up and choose one from the pile.

There might still be some silly gifts but there can't be any singling out like this.

Namechangeemergency · 12/12/2016 09:28

Its a joke.
Someone went to a pound shop and grabbed toilet cleaner because it would be 'hilarious'

They are kids. They do daft things.

Mind you, think of the ridiculous things adults buy for SS thinking they will be funny.

The pound shop around here has loads of random crap under the Secret Santa sign. "They'll never guess it's toilet roll!" Etc.

Buy her something nice for a quid and "swap" with her later? It sucks but I wouldn't assume malice.

RentANDBills · 12/12/2016 09:41

That sounds like a 13 year olds idea of a joke present.

I've only ever been part of a secret santa once; put a huge amount of thought and effort into my gift, spent more than the budget etc etc.
My gift was a crap, wilko bargain coffee pot - and I hated coffee.

It's just set up for disaster really.

Lottieloves · 12/12/2016 09:42

Maybe the girl that gave your dd the secret santa didn't have money to go to Poundland and just used something from home??.. although £1 doesn't sound much....

Ceramicglass · 12/12/2016 09:43

I am with Lottie here

FrickOnAStick · 12/12/2016 09:46

Agree it sounds like a joke misfired. Sort of a fart joke made flesh. Literal toilet humour, not a personal attack.

BowieFanMk2 · 12/12/2016 09:49

As a teacher with the same £1 limit we've had such classics as Toilet roll, 4 tins of beans, an arm bandage, a pill box and a roll of duct tape.

I have since learned teenagers have a weird sense of humour.

Purplebluebird · 12/12/2016 09:50

Definitely a joke! Would have made me giggle if I was that age!

NekoHime · 12/12/2016 09:57

Thanks everyone. I hope that it was an ill conceived joke and not something done out of malice. I also really hope that it wasn't because the girl couldn't afford to get anything, because that would be awful

I once got nipped tassles and a spanking paddle from office secret santa that got opened in front off everyone. I was mortified and more than a bit pissed off at the utter inappropriateness of it. I would have preferred loo cleaner tbh.

PickleSarnie · 12/12/2016 10:03

^^nipple

halcyondays · 12/12/2016 10:27

if they get on then just a joke
