to ask for recommendations for aftershave for father

Hi wise mumsnetters

I want to buy some aftershave/EDT/EDP for my father for Christmas. I would not know where to start with trying to find something. Have been looking at a few websites but this just confuses me even more, there's so much choice.

He's 82 years old and when I mentioned buying him some and asked what sort of smell he likes he replied "just something that smells nice". Well, that's very helpful...... not. He likes to look smart but has never really owned any nice toiletries etc. I think the last bottle he owned was one advertised by Henry Cooper back in about the '70s.

Any suggestions please?

My dad likes any of the aramis fragrances. Estée Lauder intuition for men is nice, or Pleasures. I really like YSL L'Homme too-DH wears that. BIL wears Spicebomb. Chanel are always nice too but prices-Allure Homme Sport is nice.

Pricey*

My dad likes Sauvage or Ralph Lauren Polo (the orange one). DH likes Chanel Allure Sport.

The original Versace for men is nice. Givenchy have created some gorgeous scents for men in recent years.

You can't go wrong with Chanel. Bleu & Allure are both nice

How about something from one of the traditional London barbers Trufitt& Hill, Trumpet or Taylor's of Bond Street ?

Penhaligons or Florid also have good options.

Trumpers not trumpet!
Floris not Florid!
Predictive text grrrr!

I wear aramis and Gloria. Much better than any women's perfume!

My dad who is 84 still uses Old Spice- a lifelong customer! However, for a treat he does like Crabtree and Evelyn's Sandalwood or West Indian Lime ranges. They usually do mini gift sets at Christmas with small bottles of the cologne, shave cream, shower gel etc in them. They do smell lovely and very traditional.

Or a fragrance from Hermes. Eg. Terre Always classy

Penhaligons do some lovely classic gents fragrances and their staff are always very helpful and will help you pick something nice.
