sorry maybe wrong board but I needed the traffic! Have had serious Diarrhea (TMI? ) now for over 24 hours and it's not easing up at all. like D&V bug without the V (acute nausea though)
Problem is I am trying to stay hydrated by sipping rehydration sachet but even a couple of sips and hour are coming straight out the other end ...
Help? What do I do?

Yes, call - it's what they're there for.

Poptart27 · 08/12/2016 02:15

I personally wouldn't call but I know myself. Have you tried rehydration sachets?

Lweji · 08/12/2016 02:17

Are you urinating normally?

Tangfastics · 08/12/2016 02:18

FML

Does anyone ever bother to READ the OP?

No, I wouldn't call. I'd take some inmodium.

Lweji · 08/12/2016 02:19

Why are you sipping dehydration fluid? Drink loads of liquids.

Also eat plain rice and drink stale coke.

AlbertHerbertHawkins · 08/12/2016 02:24

Don't take Immodium, your body is trying to expel the bug you have. Immodium will interfere with this process. Keep sipping and just keep an eye that you are still producing urine. If you stop weeing then it's time to worry.

Tangfastics · 08/12/2016 02:24

Imodium (loperamide), sorry for typo.

Lweji · 08/12/2016 02:29

Yes, don't take imodium. Keep hydrating.

Hayles88 · 08/12/2016 02:33

You have the shits just drink lots. Hardly a 111 call unless you're a small child?

Tangfastics · 08/12/2016 02:34

I can't understand why people are saying not to take Imodium. If it's severe then I would say to take it and have a diorylite sachet or even just a salt and sugar solution to help your electrolytes. I also agree with flat Coca Cola.

Continuing with severe diarrhoea is a guaranteed road to dehydration.

Lweji · 08/12/2016 02:48

Albert explained it.

And it's what most doctors I know also say.
Take it only if you really need to get out and about and can't control the diarrhea, but it's best to let your body flush whatever is causing it out.

user1481140239 · 08/12/2016 02:58

Thanks for the understanding Hayles, if you'd bothered to read my post I haven't managed to drink anything (even tiny sips) for over 24h now, that's why I'm concerned.
I did end up calling 111 and they were very good and have asked me to ni- up to the hospital (end of my street) for an IV drip. Thank you everyone. Just felt a bit of a tit calling them.

GP will tell you not to take Immodium tangfastics.

How you feel better soon OP.

Tangfastics · 08/12/2016 03:15

Well that's not my understanding.

Hospital version of Imodium is about 4 x the strength you buy otc.

No idea why a gp would tell you not to take it. However, I'm not a gp!

Ditsy4 · 08/12/2016 03:32

Well mine told me not to for the very reason Albert said ( and my mum who was a nurse) and I had asked because I needed to go on a trip. I didn't 't go someone else was sent instead. Dry ginger ale gone flat helps or 7 up because it contains a correct balance of salt and sugar.

EBearhug · 08/12/2016 08:01

Ginger ale helps with nausea, too.

Hope you're soon feeling better, OP.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/12/2016 08:05

You should drink even if it's still coming out the other end and rehydration sachets are great. Don't take immodium.

confuugled1 · 08/12/2016 08:09

Isotonic sports drinks (gone flat) also help as they too have the right balance of salt and sugar.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/12/2016 08:11

I've had loads of bugs which have lasted over 24hrs,didnt occur to me that the hospital could do anything.

littlesallyracket · 08/12/2016 08:15

Why are you sipping dehydration fluid? Drink loads of liquids.

Rehydration fluids restore salts etc that you lose with severe diarrhoea and which aren't replaced by plain water. Plain water is fine if you're only moderately dehydrated but if you've been shitting through the eye of a needle for 24 hours Diarolyte is a good idea. I had campylobacter poisoning last year and basically it was a choice of Diarolyte or a drip.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 08/12/2016 08:20

The instructions on the rehydration sachets are to sip them.
