To want to join a trade union?

Background I've worked for the same very large private company for nearly 10 years. During this time I've put up with a lot including discovering 2 of my colleagues were on £10k more than me for the same job.
Frustratingly this was 2 years ago and although I still work for the same company I've moved divisions into a completely new business with new team etc and just tried to put it all behind me. At the time I was suffering from anxiety and depression and just didn't feel mentally strong enough to pursue it.
The board have announced a profit warning and I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if there were redundancies in the new year. My job is classified as professional I suppose and I've never considered joining a union before. However I feel that I've been taken for a bit of a mug before and determined not to let it happen again. I know by joining a union it won't stop me being made redundant but it might make it more awkward for them? Does anyone else from a private company belong to a union and is it worth it?

I work for a charity which is not unionised. I have always held trade union membership. If you think you might value their input enrol now - they can't act for you retrospectively.

I think it's always worthwhile joining a union. You just never know what's around the corner.

I've just joined one, I've really no idea if they will be able to help me in the future but I wish i had been a member of one when all that other crap was going on

I quit the union, the only words I ever heard from them were "Sorry mate, can't help you."

Always got the same pay rises as everyone else, and watched them lose a day's pay for striking and sure enough accepted the shite deals raids on the pensions, pay and conditions regardless.

YANBU, everyone should be a member of a union whether or not they work in the public or private sectors.

Though it is annoying if they can't help you but they can't work miracles. However, it is very useful if you have a situation at work - could be large scale redundancy as you mention, could be bullying boss. Your membership can get you a better deal.

Join now. Don't wait because you can't get help once a situation has arisen.

I am in a professional legal role and I am a member.

I've just joined a union
I'm a nursery manager and I don't know anyone who works in private nurseries who is in one
