Newborn waking from dirty nappies

Hello folks, my 5 week old keeps waking up at some point after filling her nappy ( either a wee or poo) and has done so since she was about 3 weeks old. She doesn't appear to have any infections and her skin looks ok - it's as though she just doesn't like sitting/ sleeping with a soiled nappy. Her nappy is changed before any her naps but we're often finding that she wakes up after an hour and every time it seems to be because of a dirty nappy. As it wakes her up by changing her I often feel like I have to start again with getting her back to sleep. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

I think it's pretty normal for then to wake up if they have a dirty nappy.

Most babies do that don't they? Mine did, I think it was good as led to early potty training. From 6months we held them over toilet after meals and milk so they didn't poo or pee straight away in new nappy. Meant we rarely changed a pooey nappy as most on toilet.

Yes its called having a newborn. Would you feel comfortable sleeping with your shit/piss strapped to your arse? I'm afraid this is the joys of motherhood. It will get easier. Congratulations on your baby.

None of mine were like that though, they were totally happy in their own filth! Frustrating as it is though, it is normal and annoying to have to re-settle. They always know to poo just as they've nodded off

And even if your baby didn't wake after doing a poo, you should really be changing her anyway, unless you want her to get bad nappy rash. How would you like to sit in your own poo for any length of time?

If she's sleeping for an hour I don't think you can complain. Just change her and get on with the rest of the day.

Well sleeping in a dirty nappy isn't nice and can give your baby a sore bottom.

It's what babies do

They eat, sleep, piss, shit and vomit. Usually at the most inconvenient time

Such as when one nappy is off and your about to put the new one on, the mr whippy machine suddenly switches on

I find using posh nappies like pampas at night means the wetness wakes them less frequently. I wouldn't want them to sleep in poo though.

Is this for real? You are questioning why a baby wouldn't want to stay in a nappy full of poo. Would YOU like to sit in soiled underwear? No? Thought as much. This is normal.

My DD used to fill her nappy at 4am every day. I started holding her over a potty to save the rigmarole of a full-on nappy change and she settled back to sleep much faster/easier.

They poo a lot as newborns. It's normal.

Could be worse... my baby used the poo just as he was falling asleep, of course he had to be changed immediately, which in turn woke him up.... argh!!

That's babies for you . They wake up if they've pooed and if they are already awake and they poo then they cry .

My DS (21months) wakes when he poos every morning. Still. It's normal, change the nappy and put them back down. Good luck, youre doing fabulously!

you must clean a poo nappy!!! Baby skin reacts to poo! Well as anyone's would if you were sitting in your own shit! Sorry you need to change your baby.

Can you try going up a size? My DD kept moving up early because she was wet

Both of mine have hated being wet/dirty. It always woke them up. Totally normal. It will get easier as they get older and poo less often. You should still change a dirty nappy as soon as you notice though - even if they're asleep. Their delicate skin can get very sore very quickly.

Baby poos shocker honestly its normal im not sure what advice you are after i used to let mine lie on a changing mat after a feed so they usually pooed then but no baby wants to lie in poo

It's normal and you should definitely change a dirty nappy, especially a poo. She has very delicate skin at her tender age.

Come on MN, on ds I didn't realise how much a NB would poo.

With advertisements about babies sleeping though it hard not to question yourself.

As to your op, that sounds like normal newborn behaviour to me. My DD would have been the same at that age. She did get to a point where she didn't notice (and nor did I till I went to feed her or something ), but this was later than five weeks.

It's normal and on the rare occasion my DS didn't wake after doing it I changed him regardless of the fact that it would wake him because why on earth would I leave him in a dirty nappy?
