New sofa or new cooker?

Sofa has been broken for a little while now. Cooker isn't broken, but old and only two hobs working on it now and cooks very slowly. I want a new sofa, hubby wants new cooker, his argument being it's nearly christmas and we're hosting. My argument is we'll have either nowhere to sit or be very uncomfortable. Can only afford to replace one (second hand) before christmas. Wwyd?

Cooker as it is on the way out and you can sit on the floor and eat or sit on a comfy sofa and be hungry

When you say broken...how broken? As in really broken or just a bit tatty/saggy?

If it's the latter, i'd see if I could buy a cheap throw to spruce it up a bit for the next few months and go with the cooker. If it's really knackered, i'd go for the sofa.

One end of the sofa is completely sunken, the springs are scraping against the floor. The cooker is on the way out but I'm hoping it'll last til first pay after Christmas! Ugh

Compromise -

get a new cooker and find a good quality sofa on freecycle, and get a sofa to your liking when you can afford it.

Cooker if its not cooking at right temp, you may give people food poisoning...

I'd go for cooker but I like my food. Also 2nd hand sofas are much cheaper to pick up I think than decent pre used cookers.

Well the cooker is broken, isn't it? If it only cooks slowly and the hob doesn't all work. I'd definitely go for the cooker.

If it's an electric oven and it's gone slow, a new element might only be around £20 and you can replace it yourself? (Obvs turn fuse off so you don't electrocute yourself etc)

To be honest bacon it's so old, the handles are stuck on with sellotape ide rather get a new one 😂 thinking about it logically the cooker is the obvious choice!

As I see it, if you're going to be hosting for Christmas you should be looking to replace both items now.

Research what make/model of cooker you'd like and decide what style/colour sofa you want and look to buy them secondhand - this is a particularly good time of year to find 'preloved' goods and you may find that you can buy both items for the price of one bought new,

15 or more years ago a used cooker that retailed at £1600 cost me £400. It was in pristine condition and continues to work perfectly.

My sofas were bought new but that was because I wanted a matching pair and I was able to secure a deal that was equivalent to buy one get one half price.

Revised opinion: I'd replace the cooker and look to prop up the sunken end and sagging springs of the sofa with books/bricks and cover it with a festive throw.

What's your budget, Jeff? Argos have new freestanding gas or electric cookers from £159 but you should be able to find a more expensive 'big brand name' used model for less on gumtree.

Sofas on eBay -sort by distance first and pick up only. I've seen 3 piece suites for sub £50.

Get cooker from new if u can. Black Friday!!

Cooker gets my vote. It's not ideal having a less than comfy sofa but not being able to cook a meal is worse.

Then a FB post asking if anyone has any old sofas they are getting rid of. People might well be getting new sofas for christmas so you could pick up some old ones.

Have you seen the Curry's essentials range?

You can get an electric cooker for 130£. I'm not sure if that's close enough to secondhand prices to consider?

Get a free sofa from fb or somewhere. Lots of people will be replacing in the sales in the new year. I would spend more on a cooker now.

Next clearance! I just got a lovely 3 seater corner sofa for £300! It's £1500 in the next catalogue! Don't waste money buying second hand, you can get a lush NEXT one for just a little more Smile
