Reading some of the threads got me thinking. Had anyone ever read a thread and thought I know who that is IRL or I think I know who/where they're talking about? Light hearted Sunday night post of course!

Yes. It was a horrible situation and she ended up getting a (well deserved) roasting. It would have been very obvious to anyone who knew her that it was her as the situation was so specific. I didn't comment nor did I ever mention I'd seen it.

Yes I recognised a friend and told her. I didn't advance search her to read any of her posting history; I only read the thread I recognised her on. I think she's changed her username now. SmEggnog I hope it's not you!

No ex-p's partner likes to stalk me. I'm quite recognisable with posting about losing someone which isn't (thank god) that common a circumstance.

Once was awful - couldn't believe the OP had posted so much about an awful situation (hers) and it was TOTALLY obvious to anyone who knew her I should imagine

I spotted my sil on here. She had given some identifying details in the back story. I didn't tell her I saw it. She was posting about her own family, although a lot of the inside and outs were lacking in reality.

I just left her too it.

Yes one of my very close friends and the majority of posters told her whst I did - to LTB.

Yes, someone I know slightly through a shared hobby. One comment about a group we both belong to with one key identifying fact about the group and one about her.

I posted when my ex assaulted me... my mums friend saw it and messaged me. She ended up being a great support to me actually leaving my marriage and I am very glad she is a mumsnetter.

I also wonder if anyone has seen a less than favourable thread about someone and realised if was written about them? And if so, did the responses make them 'change their ways'

I recognised a (long term online) friend from a heartbreaking post. When she posted something vague but connected on FB a few days later, I PMed her and mentioned that I thought she may have posted about it on MN and if it was her, my heart was going out to her and she could talk to me anytime she needed to. I didn't AS any of her other posts, and didn't really take in her username, so wouldn't know her from Larry now on MN.

She was getting a lot of sympathy and leaving out some very pertinent details.
I didn't do anything but I kept an eye for a while because she was posting about very sensitive stuff and I didn't want vulnerable people being sucked in.
She was making a lot of stuff up.

There was a poster in 'baby names' who mentioned her daughter's (uncommon) name - which is the same as my niece.
so I was convinced it was my sister and every post I saw her write after that I was looking for clues,

it wasn't my her though, unless she's trolling MN by constantly mentioning her beautiful fancy house/expensive car/lovely handsome husband/perfectly perfect kids as she has none of these in real life!

I think a lot of people don't realise how common certain situations or even turns of phrase are. I've seen a lot of posters and thought "someone who knows me could well think that's me", with same child age, marriage length, region, background etc etc. Unless it really was very specific in detail, I'd always think it more likely not to be anyone I know.

Yes I recognised someone, they didn't post anything particularly private, nothing that her facebook friends wouldn't know about, so I never said anything as I don't think any privacy was beached by me knowing her on here due to her just using here for general stuff not private stuff.

If someone was posting uber private things under what they thought was anonymity but I knew they were identifiable, i'ld tell em

I was chatting to a newcomer to the village in the pub one night and as we were exchanging life stories, she suddenly exclaimed "oh my god, you are XXXXXX from MN!!!" My story was clearly fairly unique and identifiable!

It shook my up as I had never considered that somebody I know might be on here as none of my friends use the site. She never outted me though as she uses it a lot herself and understands.

Have namechanged several times now anyway.
