AIBU to think i'm not the only person whose oven door has exploded?!

I have a hotpoint gas oven, about five years old.

Last week I was upstairs when I heard a loud noise. No one else was in, all the dogs were with me.

I went downstairs and saw that my oven door had exploded! Glass was everywhere! What is really odd is that the oven hadn't been on for about 16 hours! Maybe there was a crack in the glass although I don't think so as I wipe it down frequently and hadn't noticed anything, but even if that had of been the case surely it would explode when heating up or cooling down?

Has anyone had anything similar happen? Everyone I know has laughed and said it could only happen to me!

There were bits of glass even up on the work surfaces behind jars! I was a bit weirded out lol cos have been reading spooky threads and watching The Exorcist tv series 😆.

Please let me know I'm not the only person this has happened to.

Also should I contact hotpoint or is there no point as oven not in warranty period?

Mine did! But I had just cleaned the glass which can weaken it apparently. The oven was on too - I'm surprised yours went when it hadn't been switched on. The bang was tremendous and very scary.

PandaInTheMorning · 14/11/2016 15:01

Not happened to me but there was someone on here recently who had the same thing.

I don't know if hot point would do anything now.

GipsyDanger · 14/11/2016 15:02

Sometimes if you don't push the tray thing far enough in when cooking it can cause a weak spot in the glass which will then shatter. If it's out of warranty they don't have to do anything about it but I'd ask if you can buy the glass separately

SpookyPotato · 14/11/2016 15:03

Yes mine did it a few months ago! It was an electric one around 8 years old, was warming up and then glass everywhere. Thankfully toddler was out of the room at the time Confused
We just got a new one as knew the manufacturer wouldn't do anything.

Happened to me. Apparently it happens to shower doors, too, which is terrifying . . .

Crikey, sounds like a not completely uncommon occurrence despite what my friends think! My oven had a double glazed door and it was the outer layer that exploded. Same thing happening with shower doors is a terrifying thought! Glad I just have a shower curtain!

Happened when I was a student. Never found out why it happened but was pretty horrifying.

pinkieandperkie · 14/11/2016 15:42

This happened to me a couple of years ago. I was standing next to the oven chopping veg and the glass door just exploded into the kitchen. Glass everywhere. It was scary. I don't know anybody else that this has happened to. My oven was five years old and well looked after. We replaced the oven.

FlyingElbows · 14/11/2016 15:53

Happened to me too. Hotpoint electric oven, 7 years old, shut the door and it exploded. That glass gets everywhere.

Fluffyears · 14/11/2016 17:37

There are a few stories to f this on the internet. The weird thing is that the ovens are cold when it happens as you would expect it to happen heating/cooling due to enosnsion and contraction of glass.

Tarla · 14/11/2016 17:48

There was a thread about this same issue not too long ago, think it was in chat.

LuckySantangelo1 · 14/11/2016 17:51

Yep happened to me too. Luckily mostly it went inwards rather than covering the kitchen. Shower screens and patio windows can also spontaneously shatter.

Rrross1ges · 14/11/2016 17:53

Poltergeist activity 👻. Our shower screen once mysteriously shattered when DS jumped through it

IEatCannibals · 14/11/2016 17:55

Yes I remember the thread a while back.

I actually would contact hotpoint because if it's a known fault then they may well sort it. Plus maybe even if you moan enough about the danger they will sort it. I had a two year old zanussi dishwasher which caught fire and I went a bit bonkers to zanussi and they replaced it.

My neighbour's Audi had ITs driver's side window implode on them once for no reason. Thankfully it was on the driveway rather than doing 70mph on a motorway at the time!

Autumnchill · 14/11/2016 17:56

Guy at work had a new SMEG one fitted and it exploded on first use!

ItShouldHaveBeenJingleJess · 14/11/2016 18:58

Me too! I remember just staring in shock trying to figure out what had happened - the inner glass remained intact but the outer sheet just shattered! I'm liking the fact that cleaning can cause it, though - any excuse not to do the dreaded oven scrub. Horrified at shower doors, though!

neuroticmumof3 · 16/11/2016 07:31

I've never trusted patio doors! I have recurring nightmares about not being able to lock them, now I'll probably dream I can lock them and then they'll explode 😆!

Shocked to hear a SMEG exploded, I'd expect better from them.

We had only dismantled and cleaned the oven door inside and out about two months' ago. I only use Method cleaners as most other cleaning products make me wheeze and itch. If a glass door is weakened by being cleaned then i don't see that it can be fit for purpose!

I do think manufacturers should make us aware that this can happen, I will contact hotpoint with photos, complain vigorously and see what happens. At the very least there should be a warning in the paperwork gumpf that this can happen!
