AIBU to think that this parcel shouldn't have been delivered

Ordered a package that had an estimated delivery of tomorrow

Got out the shower this morning to find a card through the door -missed delivery, left at house x

House x is 8 doors away, parcel weighs 20kg

Lady that lives there has additional needs -she's opened the parcel not understanding it wasn't for her -totally not her fault, she's absolutely lovely

So now i'm trying to transport a flat pack desk back to my house,in several trips -and i'm not sure it's all there

Why in earth would they have delivered a heavy item so many houses away and to a lady who obviously has additional needs?

Because they need to get the parcel delivered asap so they can get paid.... not good but they have shit working conditions

Estimated delivery date so a day early isn't an issue.

Leaving it with a neighbour. They don't know your neighbours medical history.

They just want the parcel delivered as it's relevant to their pay. Can't blame them TBH.

Why did the neighbors open a parcel. If I was taking in a parcel then it's not for me or I would be expecting a parcel.

I'd complain to the company you bought the item from and also the couriers. Totally unacceptable.

Eve the OP explained that the neighnour has additional needs and didn"t understand that the parcel wasn't for her.

OP I don't think YABU, however, as others have said, delivery companies like YODEL etc penalise drivers for parcels not delivered, so that's why they will leave parcels anywhere.

The driver didn't need to know her medical history, it would have been very obvious to them as soon as she opened the door

Do drivers only get paid per successful delivery?

This is why i avoid yodel and especially hermes.
They may have shit employers and working conditions but doesn't mean they can then do their job badly.
Neighbours next door yes, even 2 either side, 8? No, they just didn't care.
My neighbours and i have had breakable items chucked over our fence,under our mat, onto our garage and put into our garbage bin. they've even put items into the bin and put the slip through letterboxes when people were in hate them. I've spoken to companies who won't even use their own couriers

Sometimes you just get bad drivers, I once had a missed delivery and the company forced the drivers to take a pic of the house time stamped to show they were there. So when I called to complain they directed me to look at the pic. It was my neighbours house, the houses are quite far apart, in a rural setting, and the house sign, was very visible in the photo. It's got a totally different house name to mine. Neither me or the customer services agent could understand how he had got confused. 😂

I had a mattress for a double bed left with neighbour 100 yards down the road. Poor neighbour had to keep it in his garage. Had to load it into car to bring it home. I was furious and so embarrassed

Once she'd opened the door, it was too late, really. It'd be rude and potentially look discriminatory to presume she couldn't take it, so the correct thing to do is to ask if you can leave the parcel for number X there, which presumably she agreed too. They wouldn't have got paid if they hadn't delivered it somewhere and I'm guessing nobody is delivering parcels on Sunday without really needing the cash.

Just an unfortunate turn of events, I think.

I can understand you're annoyed. But to be fair to the driver there's a lot in the news at the moment about the shit working conditions and poor pay.

Complain. Probably won't achieve anything, but at least you've told them you aren't happy!

I had a 20kg sack of cat food delivered with instructions where to leave it if not in. The sender had helpfully put these instruction on a huge label in big writing on the front. Where was it left? On the door step, in front of the door, oh and completely visible and available from the street! So when I got home with screaming toddler in a buggy there's a massive sack I can barely move in my way!!! Garr. Now I know the driver has just lugged it from the van and doesn't want to move it again, but not exactly great!

In your case OP I honestly don't get 8 doors away - surely that's a lot of effort for the driver to go to!

Yes and depending on the company and where you live...they might only be getting about 50p to deliver your desk.

Complain to the vendor. If it was opened when you collected it, the best option would have been to leave it there and demand the vendor sends you an unopened one. Too late for that now I know.

Did the delivery driver really try eight houses in a row in his determination to find someone who was in? That's bloody weird. You'd have thought that if he had to lug it around like that he'd have got the message that it was best delivered to yourself or just taken back in his van.

Certain delivery companies are utterly useless (Yodel, Hermes, DX for example). No help now, but you'll know not to order from whatever company you ordered from again if they use such a useless delivery service.

They'll have gone to one nearby where they know someone is usually in, or could see that it looked like someone was...

The few times I ordered stuff online you were able to say where to leave items if you were not in. What did you expect the driver to do with your desk? Wasn't eight doors away a lot easier than having to collect it from the depot?

I understand that the conditions for delivery drivers are just awful.

One thing I have learned is to make sure there is an absolutely clear understanding with the company about the delivery of large items, and to pay the extra for a timed delivery slot if there is any possibility that you might not be able to be on high alert all day.

I learned this the hard way. Bought a load of flooring from Floors 2 Go and the delivery driver left it on the street outside my house because he wasn't being paid for a delivery to the door! It was January and raining! Each pack weighed kilos and kilos - and I had no help because DH was at work. I could barely lift them - it was right at the limit of what was physically possible for me, and I honestly think the majority of women wouldn't have been able to lift them. I was totally exhausted by the end of it. It's the company that are the bastards in this case, not the driver.

You honestly think the best option is to leave a desk in the home of a neighbour with addition needs and complain to the vendor that said neighbour opened it by mistake??

My DH is a courier. For a massive company, not Hermes, yodel etc. He is paid a salary plus overtime. He works for one of the better courier companies but even at that his conditions are shit. Basically the bottom line is get the parcel delivered. They don't care. If you are caught speeding, miss a delivery, stuck too long in traffic, are off ill they will slap you with various warnings. Staff are fired over the slightest thing. On paper it all looks good but the reality is that it is a shit job.

Please if you are ordering online be in for your deliveries or give clear instructions if you are not.
