To let my 7 and almost 9 year old dd's watch this?

We're working through the Harry Potter films which they're loving so far. As am I. Next up is The Deathly Hallows p1. I haven't seen these ones but I hear they're much more grown up and dark than the others.
Would you reccommend I let the dd's watch this with me tonight or are they too young?

Deathly Hallows is probably no more dark than the rest of them. The second one is quite heart-wrenching but probably more so for older fans.

It really depends on the child.

There is a lot going on there which could overwhelming for a more sensitive child. Do they know Dobby dies?

We told DS1 before he watched it because it's pretty upsetting.

I'd let them. If they love HP not watching it would be torture! You can always fast forward anything that looks like it will really upset them. Can't think of anything tbh.

If I'm thinking of the right film, there is a scene when Hermione is 'tortured' by one of the death eaters which isn't pleasant, it's quite a short bit though.

My Dn is 5 and has seen them all with my supervision. She needed a cuddle when Dobby died & had lots of questions about what death means but I viewed that as a positive.

Personally I wouldn't. The intensity ramps up massively In the last two and there are a LOT of deaths of much loved characters, lots of fighting and battles that get gruesome in places and a fair bit of dark magic. There are also a few scares and a nasty torture scene. More details here:

For the record mine haven't seen it and haven't moaned. We have discussed it and they agreed it's best to not watch it yet. The oldest is 12 but very sensitive. The middle is 9 and quite hardy but I still think she wouldn't cope yet.

If you want to do it watch it yourself first so you can warn them, choose if you want to skip bits and generally be totally aware of when the bad bits are.

Yes Pilko, you don't see the torture but you hear Hermione screaming then her laying on the floor with 'Mudblood' etched into her skin.

Mine has seen them all. She got cinema tickets for 100% attendance many moons ago and the only one which scared her was the one where Harry is on the water and reaches in and a hand grabs him 😂

I think DH is a bit maturer than the rest but not darker iyswim lots of angst and anger between the 3 characters its up to you, I gasped and then cried atDobby dying and im a grown up

As with any film which has PG or age recommendations, its best to watch it yourself first and decide - all kids are different. I think mine would have been scared by the earlier ones at age 7, let alone any from Goblet on.

MrsJay, I had read the book many times and knew it was coming and still blubbered like a baby when Dobby died.

I let my DCs watch but only because we'd watched them all together as a family. Once you start the Deathly Hallows you have to see it through really- come out the other side with a bit of resolution and redemption

Also. I don't think there is anything wrong with kids being a bit scared - isn't that half the fun? Obviously you don't want them terrified but a few jumpy scares are just fine.

Watch them yourself first. Only way to decide as only you know your DC.

Oh i was in bits. The bit where bellatrix tortures Hermoine is a bit graphic. I think it is probably fine for a 7yr old if they have watched the rest it all comes good in the end part 2 is literaly dark so many night scenes i was squinting to see

My children have watched it, with me. Part 1 is boring as hell tbh. Youngest pottered off to play elsewhere.
It's quite dark but not radically more dark than the earlier films imo.

My eldest has watched it but only after he read the books so he expected what happened a little more. He was 9

Watch them yourself first then you can make an informed choice how to deal with it with your DC.

DS has just turned 7 and is HP mad (thank god - I have a deep abiding love for the books!). We've been working our way through the films and books all year. Book wise we've just started OoTP. Film wise we've just watched HBP so DH pt1is next.

I'm holding off for a couple of mnths on DH as he thought HBP was sad and was a bit quiet after it. I've told him lots of people die in the next films and that they are a bit scarier than the other ones, but he's still keen to see them. However I'm going to catch up on the books a bit first and give him time to process events in HBP.

I love that the books have started some really useful conversations about 'good' and 'bad', how friendships work, bullying, how to figure out who to trust, how sometimes it's ok to challenge authority and sometimes you need to take people's advice...Life, death the universe and everything!

My son is 8 and he has read all the books but only seen the PG films. I think seeing the films is much scarier than reading the books as they are limited by their imaginations when they are reading.

Have they read the books because you could chat to them about the later books and see how scary they found them and whether any particular bits worried them.
