Aibu to cringe at 'Oi'?

I'm dating someone who often opens his texts with an Oi.

Think he's just going for a light friendly tone but I find myself cringing. In my world Oi isn't often used other than as a cheeky rebuttal ie "Oi, hands off that's my chocolate cake".

My friends and family would definitely raise eyebrows if he greeted them with an "Oi".

Am I being a snob?

No.

He sounds dreadful.

I'm cringing for you. I'd have to tell him to stop.

TheNaze73 · 08/11/2016 17:35

No, he sounds like the missing link

Mybugslife · 08/11/2016 17:36

Is it just by text or would he actually say it to your/other peoples face?
If just text then I'd hope he gets over it. Or say something to him.
if he'd actually say it to people then I'd have to tell him where to go....I actually find it really rude

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 08/11/2016 17:37

I have a colleague who messages "Oi :p" if hes bored. I've never heard him actually say it - does the man your dating also use it when you're face to face?

I don't say "oi" either really, although colleague hasn't bothered me thus far. Perhaps because he's a colleague and not a partner, though...

DonaldStott · 08/11/2016 17:37

No. That would be enough to put me off dating him. Does he do 'banter'?

embarrassedbuthopingitsalright · 08/11/2016 17:49

Yes mainly text. I don't think I've ever heard him address me with an Oi in person.

He does banter but so do I. We've known each other since childhood and I used to be a sarcastic bitch to him Blush but grew up when I realised I was being an utter twat.

Thinking about it he says it more when we've had a bit of a disagreement and he wants to get my attention.

How do I tell him to stop? Nicely.

MIL starts every FB post with 'O'

O, that cake looks nice
O, DS looks nice
O, are you coming to dinner on Sunday

It's like she's channelling Nessa from Gavin & Stacey.

Dieu · 08/11/2016 17:52

Just say that as far as you're concerned, 'oi' is on a par with lol and hun. And with getting you're and your wrong, or there/they're/their. Spot the pedant!

Heratnumber7 · 08/11/2016 17:52

I suppose it's better than oik. Marginally.

OreoHeaven · 08/11/2016 17:52

I yell "Oi!" As a last resort if my children are ignoring me. Would never use it in a text or refer to someone verbally with it.

I say Oi a lot. Mostly if I'm scolding someone in a light way, like your chocolate thing: 'Oi you! Stop being so cheeky' or in a panic, like: 'Oi! Don't run in the road!'

Oi can even be quite seductive, as in a soft: 'Oi! Come over here,' with a wink. Maybe that's what he's going for. So I wouldn't be horrified at his uncouthness. But if you don't like it, just say you'd rather he didn't say it.

embarrassedbuthopingitsalright · 08/11/2016 18:05

I hadn't thought of it that way, yes, I can see that it could be seductive. Blush

Iklboo I want to be fb friends with your mil, that sounds excellent

DeathpunchDoris · 08/11/2016 19:01

Seriously? I think Oi is funny and I wouldn't take offence at all.

embarrassedbuthopingitsalright · 08/11/2016 19:59

I think I've actually changed my mind!
Thinking about Limited's take I think it's really quite sexy now...
But only if said in the right tone
