To think I didn't need the receipt ??

Went shopping (in a rush) and left 1 item after paying

Got home saw I'd forgotten it and went straight back. Went to same till and was told by the man who served me "it's fine! It's at customer services"

Went there and was told to show receipt. I thought it was in my purse but I'd actually had put it in the shopping bag..... they said no I couldn't have the item as didn't have the receipt ....
The man on the till remembered me and knew I'd paid about 15 mins previously yet I was told repeatedly I had no proof
They were very aggressive saying "no proof no item" about 2 inches from my face

In the end I just picked it up and said "I'm not a thief I've just spent over £30 why would I try and get something for £2.95 for free??"

What would the receipt prove, anyone could have bought it, gone back and got that one as well if they have a receipt? I would have thought cashier remembering Wouldham been what's important

I suppose they may want to check it was scanned and paid for?

I don't know it was just so frustrating and as the man had remembered me it seemed v over the top

Plus I was in a rush to get two casseroles on before leaving for school !

'Proof of purchase' where I work is indeed if a colleague remembers you....so that would suffice for me

Also, cctv? I often look up that kind of thing for customers

I would have assumed that most shops would have been fine if the staff member remembered you.
Is it an independent shop or a chain? if a chain it might be worth emailing head office / tweeting them.

It was just frustrating as I was rushing and wanted to get back to cook but then I had to go through interrogation as they clearly thought I wanted to steal some chicken !!

Wasnt M&S by any chance was it? Mum had the same there made worse by the fact that the woman demanding pop was the woman who served her, she said pretty much the same as your man "Oh yes, we have it here" and then demanded her receipt!

Mum is obsessive about receipts so she did have it, but she was quite surprised and a bit pissed off.

ANd thinking about it, providing the receipt proves nothing other than you paid for chicken, it doesnt mean that you havent already packed it!

But if you had packed it, it wouldn't be left behind in the shop?!

I don't think you should have and I can see how they could have just given it to you but at the same time the retail worker was probably just following the rules. You would be surprised the things they'll fire you over. Giving a £2.95 item to someone without proof of purchase would do it.

It proves you paid for chicken at a specific time with the cashier who gave them the forgotten item.

My point is that a receipt isnt really much use at proving anything other than the item had been paid for, which the cashier had already done.

Jobsworths, where's the common sense, no mind telling you you need the receipt when they remembered serving you. Glad you just picked it up, what did they say to that?

Utter madness. The say of the operator clearly knowing you had left it behind (and I would have remembered something like that too) should have been enough for a manager to give you the item.

If you can't trust your staff enough for that, they shouldn't be there in the first place.
