WWYD - blood on hotel mattress

I'm in London with dd and she has the mother of all periods. She put clean knickers and a pad on last night but this morning there is a massive pool of blood on the sheets and it has soaked right through the mattress protector on to the mattress.

It's a budget hotel (small independent place), and the mattress looks very new. Shall I strip the bed and leave a note apologising, or go and tell them at reception? Bit worried I'm going to get charged for the mattress which will make this a very expensive trip!

And I'm going to have to wear yesterday's knickers as I had to donate my only clean pair to her this morning, she'd soaked through both the pairs she had. Not a good day so far!

I work on Reception and have had people call down to say this had happened and my response is always "don't worry about it, these things happen" and then I let Housekeeping know.

I can't speak for that specific hotel but we would never ever bill anyone extra for that!

My dh stays in London hotels all the time and trust me mattresses have shown far worse.

Strip the bed and move on.

I assume you've tried putting cold water on the mattress to clean it? Works wonders?! On the basis it's a small, independent hotel you know what you need to do I'm afraid.

Flip the mattress.

Bundle up the sheets at the end of the bed. Perhaps put them in the shower and get them a little wet. No one is going to rummage through them looking for stains.

Forget.

Go to Primark for new pants (other shops available).

For ages and as we were getting on the train yesterday she said 'I can't believe I have to bleed out of my vagina on today of all days' . She does make me laugh.

I'd discreetly tell the hotel (not to embarrass your DD) as they will have seen so much worse. If there is an English speaking chamber maid a quiet word with her? Even small premises keep spares as these things happen all the time.

Poor DD. This is why I always take at least 5 pairs of knickers when I go away - you never know!!!

Poor girl! For future reference brolly sheets and diary doll pants are brilliant for dealing with heavy periods. Both have come with me on holiday when I'm bleeding (or 8.5 months pregnant and paranoid about water breaking in bed).

Ok I think I'll pop down to reception and tell them. Not sure if it will be the same guy as yesterday but his English wasn't brilliant so it could be an interesting conversation.

usenamehistory I'm unsure if you are serious or taking the piss, but really? If someone had done what you are suggesting in the hotel I worked in I would definitely have charged them. However, if the guest had told me and given me chance to sort it out, then it would have been fine.

When my son was little, he wet the bed in a hotel. I phoned down and explained and they sent up a bin bag to put the sheets in and swapped the mattress so it could be cleaned. If I had just ignored it or hidden it, the room attendant would have had to deal with the gross sheets (why should she?) and the next guest would have had a stinking mattress. It's common courtesy to inform the hotel.

How old is your DD? For future ref (and if you/she are comfortable with the idea) you can get tablets to delay your period for a week or two so it doesn't clash with special occasions - sorry if you already knew this but I didn't know they existed until my friend told me she was taking them so she wouldn't be on during a festival. Brand name is Utovlan and you get them from your GP - I took them a couple of months ago as I was due on during the first day of my holiday!

Oh god I couldn't tell a guy on reception! I'd be I would leave a note though. Your poor DD. I should think it happens quite regularly.

deadly serious, I think, although I've never been in a similar situation.

I would leave a note at reception and a trip to the shops for some new underwear for you both.. I am sure they can clean a mattress without too much bother, they must have some mattress cleaner on the premises. I hope your daughter is okay, its horrible having such heavy periods. I have learnt the hard way to take lots of clean underwear with me on any trips or holidays.

Ahhh the poor poppet. Not fun.

I'd let them know ASAP for ease-of-cleaning purposes and maybe leave a decent tip! They will, of course, have seen worse.
