to be surprised at The Next Step on CBBC?

DD (8) is really into this at the moment and yet the boy drama, bitching and backstabbing has really surprised me! Granted, this is all new territory to us as she's only just started watching these kinds of things but I'm surprised by it and find it slightly awful.

Just wondering if anybody else thought the same?!

Is it worse than Grange Hill? That had heroin addiction, teenage pregnancy etc.
Next step is a dancing competition. Tedious but innocent. And a major hit.

In the episodes I've seen, there has been very little dancing!

Another way of looking at it is that it takes the everyday realities of life for older children and sends a very moral message about it (i.e. the bitching and backstabbing is presented as Wrong and Will Be Punished).

We had a look at this as all my dd's friends were watching it. I thought how great a dance show but like has been mentioned it's all about bitching and nothing much about dancing. Thankfully she didn't like it so we don't watch it.

I do think it is worse than Grange hill (and there are programmes on cbbc more like it). There is also too much preening and pouting!

This last series has been the worst. DD loves the show but is struggling a bit with this one. And yes, the amount of dancing has really reduced too!

I object to it hugely - again because it's really, really shit rather than any moral objection (I also watched Grange Hill during the Zammo heroin crisis)
There's an awful lot of non-events in it. One episode centred on whether or not one of the characters could complete a certain number of pirouettes before the dance contest - the rest of the characters spent a million years being interviewed about this "And I heard that Randy was going to do 1000 pirouettes before the dance contest and I'm like, ohmyGaaard, nobody's ever done that before!"
"Randy thinks he can do 1000 pirouettes before the dance contest. Well I just wonder whether he's got that kind of commitment!"
"Melissa thinks that Randy hasn't asked her out because he's really focused on the dance contest - and I just wonder if he's really that interested?"
Etc.

DD loves it - for some unearthly reason her head doesn't explode from boredom whenever she watches it. (She might object to her mother shouting "VAPID NONSENSE!" from the other side of the room though)

It's AWFUL and my 11 year old is obsessed with it too. Content no worse than Grange Hill but it's the scripted reality crap which gets me.

I watched an episode with my dd about a year ago and banned it. Awful programme. I don't want her to think that's a normal way to behave.

My DD is 9 and she loves it. Interestingly the main theme she gets from it is if you want to dance well then you have to work hard and as a team...

My daughter is also obsessed and so are all of her friends. We have a deal - 1 episode a day and she watches it with me. Then I can say "hmmmm, that's not how friends treat each other, is it? How do you think she could have handled that better? How do you think you'd feel if you were on the receiving end of that? It's important to distinguish between drama and really life, don't you think?" and stuff like that. I hope one day this analysis will bore her enough that she doesn't want to watch it anymore. We're going to the fucking roadshow on Sunday. FML.

DD (9) watches it for hours on catch up. I manage to tune it out tbh - although I don't think it's too bad.

It's awful. Can't bear the drama llamaing and pouting. For me, it's worse than Grange Hill ever was. I don't mind drama when it's about a real problem, but drama because, like, she like, totally looked at me...and I was totally, like, whatever....

I just don't want my ten year old taking on that teen bitchy drama. I don't think it's right for CBBC. Not too old - just not good enough and not interesting enough. The Four O'Clock club though, I love. It's funny.
