A man who says he is from my broadband provider just called to day my internet connection is getting weaker daily. He wanted me to turn on the computer so he could " show me " the fault.
It smelled like a scam to me so i just hung up. Am I over vigilant ?

I'd say you did the right thing. Probably to show you the fault he'd want to remote access your PC. I'd never ever trust any of these callers

100% Scam

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 18/10/2016 11:47

Possibly. To be on the safe side, I'd give the broadband provider a call and ask them if there was a genuine reason why you were contacted.

EleanorRigby123 · 18/10/2016 11:47

Definitely a scam.

ExcellentWorkThereMary · 18/10/2016 11:47

Scammy McScamface

DesignedForLife · 18/10/2016 11:48

Scam. Call your provider and let them know.

Did he say he was from the right provider?

bearhug · 18/10/2016 11:48

SCAM!!!! Don't ever let a random stranger have access to your computer!

Well done for hanging up on him.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/10/2016 11:51

Yes a well known scam. I think it works by infecting your computer with a virus and then they charge you to "fix it" or sweep your computer for personal information.
Broadband providers won't ring you like that and draw your attention to the weakness of your WiFi connection. They don't care that much!

pasturesgreen · 18/10/2016 11:56

It's a well known scam.

As EarlyNineties wisely points out, broadband providers won't call you, it's you who'll call them and be put on hold for hours if you have any problems.

AVirginLitTheCandle · 18/10/2016 11:57

I'd say a scam.

Ego147 · 18/10/2016 11:58

Did they claim to be TalkTalk?

I've had that a few times - I think it's linked to the hack they had and the scammers are ringing up contact numbers.

chemenger · 18/10/2016 11:59

Definitely a scam, who has ever heard of a broadband provider being proactive about anything?

c3pu · 18/10/2016 12:12

I work in IT. Scam all day long.

Another common one is they phone up and say your computer has a virus... Just ask which computer it is that has the virus, as you have several!

GinIsIn · 18/10/2016 12:16

Scam with a capital S

Ohyesiam · 18/10/2016 16:30

Not hyper vigilant then!
Thanks guys. Yes they had the right provider but I guess Lloyd of our info is floating around out there on the net.....
And you are right, my provifer has never been so attentive before.
