If it was a massive jar I can understand but the lid is even mouldy 😳🙁

Poor baby I think Somone must of opend the jar either before mum brought it my god that poor baby could of been even worse if mum hadn't worked out what was wrong

You don't know if the mould was actually further down in the jar and wasn't visible from the top?

It's on the actual lid as well not just in the jar most people would open a Jar than place the lid up facing surley?

So how the lid is in the picture that's how you would place a jar lid naturally so not to have the contents touch the work top or table

I used to put the lids straight into the sink without checking it. It's easily done.

Lid off and either straight in the bin or left on the side and not given a second glance

Not the lid so much, but the mould in the jar. I'm guessing it's grown between the incident happening and the pics being taken as there's no way you could miss it otherwise.

Does mould not just grow on the surface and work it's way down? It needs to have somewhere for the spores to settle - they can't get inside, can they?

I know it's mould inside blue cheese, but they draw copper wires through it to "infect" it, I believe.

So she fed her baby from one jar and realised it was mouldy after feeding over half of it and child started being ill... then went on to open another jar of a DIFFERENT variety and found that was mouldy too???

I don't understand this. Isn't mould a fungus rather than a bacteria?

Mould grows on the surface, so it would be visible.

I've read the story - it's in the Daily Fail, so obviously is accurate, non-sensationalist, and all of the facts have been throughly checked by the investigative journalist - and I have a suspicion that there may be a no-win-no-fee lawsuit waiting in the wings.

I can't see how the mould she claims was in it could be missed - even by someone "distracted" by their baby - you know, the one they were shovelling food into. I also don't think that two different varieties could be affected, unless someone in the supermarket opened them, spat in them examined them, and then put the lids back. But the mother insists the lid popped as it should.

I don't believe her - I don't think she tested it. (If she's concentrating on her baby too much to check what she's feeding her, I can't see her checking the "pop" on lid.)

A friend and I were once just about to return a muffin in a cafe for being mouldy because it had blue spots all over when we realised they were bloody blueberries.

It doesn't add up. The mould was apparently in the bottom of the first jar but not on the top or middle, which is why she said she fed it to the baby. But how would mould get into the bottom of a glass jar without contaminating the top? Then she opened another jar straight after and found mould in the top. That could be explained by someone having opened it in the shop but I'm a bit sceptical about the whole thing.

It's very unusual that two different batches were mouldy and the company say they've had no other reports from other customers. She must be very unlucky indeed.

Also pp was correct in pointing out that mould is a fungus, not a bacteria.

I don't believe her either. I think cow and gate are basically unconcerned because they know there is no way their jar got like that without her interference

Also when the mould grows it grows as one big lump, like the skin on a rice pudding

So she would've had to pull off the whole skin somehow

I read the first part of the article but all the ads popping up got too irritating, plus it's the daily fail!

How she didn't notice is beyond me. Also 3/4 of a jar in one sitting seems like a lot for a 5 month old.

'Distracted' - aye, right. So distracted by the baby she was feeding that she didn't notice what she was feeding to... The baby she was feeding. Compensation case no doubt.
