To ask for help with sick 6 week old.

I am so sorry I know this isn't the correct thread but my ds (4) is day 2 of a vomiting bug (getting better) dh has just got it this evening and now dd (6 weeks old) has just started vomiting. Can you please give me tips or advice on how to deal with a FF 6 week old with vomiting please.

Speak to your HV or doctor - they may suggest divorce. Main priority is liquids not calories so baby doesn't get dehydrated. You should be able to feel his fontinelle on the too of his head - if it's dips in he's dehydrated. You can always take him into a&e or call 111

Are they just throwing back up their bottle or do you think they have a bug? How are they otherwise? Any high temp ?

Call 111 and ask them for advice. You'll feel better and reassured for it.

I'm not a medical professional but from experience the key is pumping in more liquids than they spew out.

It's literally been the first episode about 2 hours ago. No temperature as yet and surprisingly still wanting food despite the fact none of it staying down. I would love to say just throwing up a bottle but this is the third attempt to feed and each one has come up projectile style.

As baby is so young I would phone nhs direct for advice.

I would continue FF and offer cooled boiled water as well to prevent dehydration. If you're concerned for any reason, call 111. Most likely she will be fine, but they would rather check her over and alleviate worry in any case.

Ds was (and still is) a very sicky child (18 months) - but at 6 weeks it wasn't down to a bug, so feel free to ignore this advice!

Personally I'd try feeding little and often, keep an enormous stash of muslins to hand as well as baby wipes and tissues. Make sure you stay hydrated- if you get a bug too then you need to be as well as you can be.

She is a sleep at the minute would anyone suggest dream feeding or wait until she next wakes up.

I would wait until she wakes up. She will be tired and while she is not in discomfort and sleeping, I'd let her be. Other posters have said little and often and that's what I would do too, some (most) may come back up but some will be absorbed and keep her going. I would use this time to brace myself and home for the day of gastro that lays ahead...

I would wait until she wakes and then feed little and often. 5ml every 5 minutes is what they give in A&E for dehydration, you can do that with formula or if that is not staying down try cooled boiled water with dioralyte if you have some. There is a schedule here that works for breastfeeding, but you could follow the timings for giving milk from a bottle. If she vomits more than 4 times in one hour I would phone 111 and get her seen.

You can check if she is getting dehydrated by checking her capillary refill. Press down with one finger on her breastbone for 5 seconds. When you remove your finger count how many seconds it takes for the pink colour to return, if 2 seconds or above then get her seen. Also if she seems floppy, lethargic, drowsy or just not right get her seen asap.

Firstly do not give cooled boiled water to a 6 week old. It isn't safe and risks giving the baby a low sodium.

Second, is the baby vomiting just milk? If there is anything green go straight to A and E. Bile is green (contrary to popular belief the yellow stuff in vomit isn't bile) and that's an emergency.

Third, when you say "projectile" that's quite a specific thing relating to pyloric stenosis. Most babies have some power chucks but not genuine projectile vomits. The volume brought up always looks much more than it actually is.

Fourth, when babies feed when they're well they usually drink around 150ml per kg per day. For hydration they only actually need 100ml per kg per day. So if you have a 5kg 6 week old that means baby only has to take 60ml every 3 hours as opposed to 90. So the advice of small and often is exactly right.

A vomiting 6 week old baby would (should) always be taken seriously in any emergency department and if you're worried enough no one would think you're being OTT to get her checked out.

And lastly "divorce". Thank god that was a typo, I thought Mumsnet had reached peak LTB with that!

NotBadConsidering That was the exact advice I was given for 4 week old dd (by HV and a doctor) when she was vomiting, and was FF Confused I wasn't suggesting removing the FF, just offering additional fluids.

Hi everyone I am managing to keep fluids down her I am feeding her 2oz every 2 hours. My dh and ds have this also so I feel a bit lonely and exhausted. She is sleeping a lot so I spoke to 111 Doctor who was happy with what I am doing I am just on edge I know how these things can turn.

if she keeps fluids down and has wet nappies I wouldn't worry too much but otherwise I second a&e. Have had this with my DD at a few weeks old and we were admitted and put on a drip. They took it very seriously.

I am she's doing OK but I know I am not out of the woods. She was smiling and cooing before so I am hoping that's a good sign.
