To train my cat to salute me

She does this touching the side of her eye with her front paw think sometimes, it really looks like a salute. I've been trying to get her to do it on demand, lots of paw holding, encouragement and cat treats - she's just been looking at me as if I'm mad. Its like shes saying "But WHY? What's in it for ME?? I know perfectly well I'll get treats anyway"

I've had a lot of time on my hands today

clicker training?

HereIAm20 · 06/10/2016 20:47

She's a cat.

Good luck with that!

But we do want a video if you manage it! Grin

Optimist1 · 06/10/2016 20:49

Sorry, OP, the words cat and train do not belong in the same sentence!

ijustdontknowanymore · 06/10/2016 20:50

Yes 100% do it! I trained my cat to sit, and roll over. Still miss him! I second the video too!

Ohhhhbother · 06/10/2016 20:53

You can do it, you just have to keep trying. I managed to train my mother's cats, they can sit, lie down, give paw, turn and the oldest has mastered peeing in the toilet.

I trained our cat to sit and to hold out his paw.

Just need patience and a lot of treats.

CaroleService · 06/10/2016 20:58

Oh Optimist, they do! In the context of 'cat trains owner'.

hollinhurst84 · 06/10/2016 20:58

Clicker training. Mine does sit, touch hand with paw and high five

Optimist1 · 06/10/2016 21:01

I stand corrected, Carole !

Try clicker training. Don't bother buying the clicker though, just use your mouth to make the noise. Start making the noise every time you feed her so she associated it with good things then start clicking any time she does the action, rewarding with a treat. Look out for signs she might be about to do it too and say the word command (or hand signal which generally works better) then click and reward after she does it so she begins to associate the command with the rewarding action.

Trained my cats various pointless tricks this way. Admittedly training the dog was much easier and since unlike my current cat, my dog doesn't hide under the bedcovers any time someone visits, people can actually be impressed by my dogs tricks! But it was fun training the cats so no YANBU!
