Should I sell my dead mothers ring

It was a ring she had from my childhood, it really does remind me of her. She found it under the floor boards when we moved into our home when I was 2. My mum died last year.

I have been struggling for money, I have had to leave my job due to personal reasons and I am currently on ESA benefit.
I am in debt with bills and cannot even afford my car but I need to keep my car.
I currently have two active court cases as well and the money issue is just stressing me out more.

Should I just sell the ring? It is my only form of money so I can at least pay off my bills but I have a feeling I will regret this.

I cannot work until my court cases are over and I have no idea when this will be.

Can you get some advice about the debts and managing the court cases? Citizens' Advice bureau?

I am sure your mum would want you to do the best for yourself. Perhaps this means selling the ring. If you do decide to sell make sure you take it to several places to be valued so you get the best deal.

This is really sad, I'm sorry you are in this position. I would try to do everything I could not to sell as, like you said, you will regret it. Can you speak to a money advice charity to help with your bills/repayment plan? Stepchange are good.

Also, what are the two court cases? I ask because if you're struggling to pay lawyers, are they worth pursuing? Or do you not have a choice?

sadly - you probably wont get much for it - second hand jewellery doesnt go for much

i investigated selling my eternity ring a few years ago thinking i would get at least a few hundred (cost over £1k) diamonds etc - told i would get around £30/40 for it....

On one side, it's a ring that your mother found under the floor so is linked to a nice memory rather than having real sentimental value iyswim. On the other hand, it is something you have to remind you of your childhood and your mum's role in that.

Sell it. If you need the money that badly - sell it. Do you think your mother would have wanted you to go hungry or cold for the sake of a keep sake. Your mother lives on in your memories and your heart - not in a piece of metal.

I'd be very surprised if it'll be of any value, second hand jewellery rarely is.

Carefully evaluate the court cases. We don't know about yours but we do know that mostly only lawyers win. Could you cut your losses?

Have the ring valued anyway.

Debt advice is available.Your local library will know. You might have to queue. Bring a sandwich and something to read.

Sign on as available for work if at all possible. Feels and looks better.

Try your GP for short term stress relief classes/counselling/cheap ticket to leisure centre.

What would you do if you didn't have the ring? CAB, debt advice and so on. Don't think about the ring, think about any and all options.

Be aware of the differences in having a ring valued. I have a lovely ring which has a remake/insurance value of £1,750. If I sold it I would get about £50 for it.

I would explore other options first.

What kind of ring is it? I recently inherited my grandmother's engagement ring. I asked a jeweller I know about value to see if it was worth ensuring. He said to replace it would be £600, but to sell would be £100. No intention of selling luckily.

How much is it worth?

If it would clear a sizeable chunk of debt I'd sell it. If it isn't worth much, just a short term cash injection, I'd keep it.

Are diamonds really so not in demand. My mum has my granny's ring insured for about £5k, she has always thought it would be her salvation if times got hard.

Its more the fact that nobody has a happy story behind selling diamonds...second hand diamonds are always 'tainted' IYKWIM?

Gemologist here. If you want an accurate valuation please go to an auction house. They will be able to tell you its value free of charge. They will give you a value based on the weekly price of gold and diamonds. Hope this helps.

If you have to, take some photos of it so at least you have those, and take Whistlejacket16 's advice.

I wouldn't if it's meaningful. I sold an old engagement ring from an ex and only got £100 for it so you might not get much X
