To think a new £5 is worth £5 and not £100?!

There's somebody on a local selling site selling a new £5 for £100. Am I being thick? They aren't limited edition are they? I thought they were new as in slowly replacing the current £5 notes?

Ha :) if they make any money I'll sell mine

Lj8893 · 03/10/2016 18:01

Apparently someone sold one on eBay for £8.50.

Ha! Perhaps I shouldn't have sold all the ones the cash machine gave me last week then.

That's bonkers, they'll be everywhere soon.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 03/10/2016 18:03

Haha people keep trying to sell 50ps on Facebook for £10 just because the y have Peter Rabbit on them but selling £5 for £100 is a new one. Let me know if they sell it they could be on to a real money spinner!

ReallyShouldKnowBetterAtMyAge · 03/10/2016 18:03

I've had loads of them from the self service tills at the local supermarket

FinnFamilyMoomintroll · 03/10/2016 18:04

should have sold

I didn't actually sell them I spent them on chocolate

PoppyPicklesPenguin · 03/10/2016 18:04

I spent mine on sweets Grin

dontwannapullahammie · 03/10/2016 18:05

The early serial numbers are being sold for silly money to collectors I suppose

Someone on a local selling site was askin for £250 last week. They were shot down, it was wonderful.
Apparently it's because they have the AA01 serial numbers Hmm

scarednoob · 03/10/2016 18:06

I think it's only the ones with an AA number that are selling.

Mines AD16 so it's getting spent!!

PoppyPicklesPenguin · 03/10/2016 18:06

Hit post by accident!

I spent mine on sweets Grin

I bet some idiot will purchase this though I'm going to go and have a look at eBay!

exLtEveDallas · 03/10/2016 18:06

It's the 'first edition' ones that are worth more money - with serial numbers 0000000100 or lower. How cool would it be to have the very first one issued?

scarednoob · 03/10/2016 18:06

Mine's. Stupid phone.

Nakatomi · 03/10/2016 18:06

Well it depends. They'll probably be worth something eventually. I know someone who was able to sell one of the first £5 Notes with a Monarch on it for quite a lot of money.

It's like the penny black stamp. Worthless at the time but as time went on it went up in value. Same with most things really.

My favourite one is how much complete James Bond Aston Martin DB5 dinky toys go for. It can be thousands of pounds, despite millions of them being made. Why are they worth so much? Because most people have the car, but very few people have the car with the ejector seat intact. Most people lost their ejector seats after a few goes, so the intact ones are worth a lot of money.

PoppyPicklesPenguin · 03/10/2016 18:06

This makes sense, balls I never checked mine Sad

itlypocerka · 03/10/2016 18:08

I haven't had one yet. I guess I might pay £5.10 for one

But I understand why collectors could well want to pay more for an early-on serial number like AA100000000 or pay more than £50 for a consecutive run of serial numbers.

Lj8893 · 03/10/2016 18:12

Several people have commented now saying it's the AA01 serial numbers that are worth £100 type money. This one is AA50 so not worth anything much over £5.

My DH is a bank manager and a while back he came home with one (scottish one) and told me not to spend it as it's worth alot more than a fiver. Im guessing it's one of the 1st issued......I'm off to check the serial number now!

BathshebaDarkstone · 03/10/2016 18:22

Bugger I just paid DD's dinner money with my only one. Sad

PoppyPicklesPenguin · 03/10/2016 18:32

It's the fact I will never know if I had the right one

AverageGayLadAtChristmas · 03/10/2016 19:20

Oi! OhFuds! Come back Grin

RaspberryOverloadTheFirst · 03/10/2016 19:31

I heard some of the really early serial Nos went for £3000

Lj8893 · 03/10/2016 19:41

Aw the woman who was selling it has thanked everyone for thier advice and has decided she will just spend it as £5 instead Grin

AlpacaPicnic · 03/10/2016 19:48

EveDallas, the 'first' one with serial number AA01000000001 (not sure on how many 0s but you catch my drift) was in fact presented to Her Majesty The Queen, I suppose because technically it is her selfie...
