To file newborn's fingernails?

He is only a day old... Is it safe to do so?

No, just bite them. How long can his nails be at a day old tho?!

They're not that long, they're just not very straight

Their nails can be really long, particularly if they are overdue! They're soft though, so you can just bite them; I used to worry about cutting off the ends of their fingers...

I'm sure it will be fine, but will it be possible? They can clench their fingers into quite a tight fist even at that age.

Wait until he's a little older. I cut my kids nails for the first time when they were 10 days to 2 weeks.

I use adult nail clippers on my 7 month old and have done since they stopped peeling.

A word of warning - both of my dcs were born with long nails (overdue!), but their nails were fused to their fingertips. It took a while for them to free up so I could shorten them - I bit them.

Why do they need to be straight?

Filing is the recommended way to care for newborn nails.
Biting can cause infection and peeling can mean you peel off too low which will hurt. They are too soft to clip for the first month or so.

I know a lot of people bite them off and it's absolutely fine.

But I gave birth to my second child on Friday and when we were discharged on Saturday the midwife told me to file or use baby clippers and definitely not to bite them as some babies can get an infection from the bacteria in our mouths. I'm sure I did it with my first- but that's the advice I was given this time.

Bite the edge and then peel. Quicker easier and no chance of hurting babies skin.

Yeah file them if you want. Current advice is to not bite them due to bacteria. Why do you want them to be straight though?
