AIBU to put concealer on my 5yr old?

DD who is 5 managed to walk smack bang into a metal railing the other day and is now sporting a massive bruise in the middle of her forehead. It's school photo day on Tuesday and she's due to be getting a single picture and one with her younger brother.

I'm assuming that this bruise will be at the really obvious purple / yellowish stage by Tuesday, so am trying to decide between using a bit of concealer to try and disguise it / make it look less obvious in the pictures or whether to leave her with the massive shiner on her forehead to give us all something to chuckle about in years to come when she's looking back at her school photos (or I'm showing them all off to her future boyfriends!)

Can you do her hair to cover it? Concealer would probably smudge or just look dodgy!

If you ask the photographer may be able to photoshop it out.

I'd just let her be photographed as she is. My Mum used to put concealer on me for dance competitions and it made me feel awful, like I wasn't good enough and needed fixing. My Mum was embarrassed by me and I knew it. That was for spots rather than a bruise but I still wouldn't risk making her feel like that unless she is actually asking you to help disguise it.

My DS had chapped lips I could do nothing about one year. The photo arrived with them photoshopped out, he had very rosy lips, but none of the bright pink surrounding them.

It depends on the company though. Find out who it is and give them a call when you get the order form so you know what reference number the picture has.

I'd think it was bloody wonderful to have a school photo where she stands out as the child who was adventurous and proud enough to both smack her head and then not worry about how it looked. That would be one to cherish long after the bland ones have faded from memory.

You could and I wouldn't judge you. But when you have the full collection of school photos over the years you might appreciate the one with the bruise because it brings back very specific memories (I have one like this which marks the first and last time my mum got to cut my fringe).

I posted this exact thread 3 years. My DS fell off his bike and banged his chin leaving him with an inch wide haematoma. It looked like a big, purple egg on his chin. I was so upset that he was going to have a big bruise on his picture. Now, we have stories to tell as DD fell a year later and cut her face so that shows too! hey didn't offer photoshopping either time and I didn't expect them to.

Arnica is your friend. Get some arnica capsules now - and lots and lots of the arnica gel (not the cream). You shouldn't see any bruise on Tuesday if you start now.

Leave it. School photos are a record of who they are, not perfect little angels! My favourite picture of DD is her screaming at Santa!

no! leave her as she is. Bruise and all.

When she's getting married or whatever life event you can dig that picture out and have a cracking story about how she managed not to do the same now. If you edit it out with concealer or photoshop you lose it.

If I was teacher, I'd be suspicious of a parent who put concealer over a bruise/mark on their child. Alarm bells would ring, just saying.

It will get photoshopped. Concealer will make it look worse anyway with the flash off the camera... and she shouldnt feel that her bruise needs to be covered anyway.

Wouldn't it be obvious she's done it for the photo day? Presumably she's not going to send her in with concealer on Monday, too!

I agree with leaving it - will be a great story to tell.

Am appalled that kids bruises from everyday bumps and scrapes are being airbrushed out!

Are people really so bothered about their kids looking perfect?

At my sons' secondary the photographer sent a note home with the school photos reminding parents they could photo edit out spots or blemishes.
I thought it was quite sad, as if parents were confirming that they thought their child's face wasn't good enough for a photo.

This reminds me of my school photo from the age of 6, I had cut my cheek open with a rusty nail not long before, it had had to be stitched, and I looked like scarface. My mum put some bright orange hide n heal concealer on (love 1970s makeup - choice of colour orange or browny orange), which just made me look as though I had a small pile of red leicester cheese stuck to my face. It is an awesome photo.

I would just stick with the bruise.

I'd leave it for laughing at later.
