To put off going to the GP for a few days?

I know this is AIBU but if anyone wants to tell me off could you bear in mind that I'm feeling a bit scared about this and be kindish?

I have a swelling in my left areola, right next to the nipple, that is sore and sort of open and pus filled. Sometimes it gets a crusty head on it but that just comes off again within an hour or two and it's open again. My breast feels a bit sore and I feel generally a bit unwell ( but both my youngest ds and my closest colleagues have had heavy colds this week which may explain the unwellness). I first noticed a soreness and swelling on Thursday which I put down to over enthusiastic feeding by ds3, at which point there was no pus, it just looked raw, so I stopped feeding from that side then- this may explain the whole breast soreness but tbh it hurt a bit anyway before that.

Googling makes me think it's probably peridiuctal mastitis (might have spelled the wrong) or similar but obviously anything breast related also makes you worry about cancer. My auntie had breast cancer in 2011/12, recovered after a mastectomy and chemo. Ours is a family with a lot of cancer so on one hand we can be almost blasé about it and on the other we all worry we have it even when our symptoms hardly indicate it.

I have the sort of work day tomorrow that would mean if I took time out to go to the GP all hell would break loose. My manager would not be angry with me but without giving details that could identify me, I can't really take time out tomorrow unless it is so urgent that to do otherwise would be ridiculous. I have a half day booked for Tuesday for dental work and am thinking if I call the GP Tuesday morning and beg and explain I could very likely be seen that afternoon. That seems reasonable enough to me but dh is horrified that I am planning this and thinks I should be at the gp first thing tomorrow.

In all honesty this does not indicate cancer to me- irrationally I am terrified it is but when I think sensibly it almost certainly is not, so Tuesday would be fine, right?

I'd go today. Is there an out of hours in your area? Ring your GP practice and their answerphone should give this information. You obviously have an infection of some sort that is not going to get better, probably worse if you put it off.

Chippednailvarnishing · 18/09/2016 13:57

Sounds like an abscess, I'd also go to out of hours. It will only get worse otherwise.

Mybeardeddragonjustdied2016 · 18/09/2016 13:59

You only get 2 boobs!!

Get to the GP tomorrow!!

flanjabelle · 18/09/2016 14:01

Call 111 and get an ooh appointment.

GobblersKnob · 18/09/2016 14:05

Ouch, sounds like an abscess to me, you need to see someone today, walk in or 111, hope you feel better :)

MrsKCastle · 18/09/2016 14:09

Yes, do get seen today. Mastitis can be very nasty, or as others at, it could be an abscess. If you leave it, it could get worse overnight.

NicknameUsed · 18/09/2016 14:10

Abcesses don't get better on their own. If the infection spreads you could end up with septicaemia. I had one in my groin a couple of years ago and it me me really ill.

If you are feeling unwell with it you need antibiotics asap. See OOH today

MaddyHatter · 18/09/2016 14:15

OOH today or gp tomorrow.

if you're feeling unwell, its an infection and it needs dealing with.

Thank you all- I just called 111 and they're having the ooh doctors call me back within an hour, they said they want me to be seen in the next six hours. DH is smug. I appreciate your advice because I'd have stubbornly left it!

If you get a choice of locations go to the one nearest the hospital...

flanjabelle · 18/09/2016 16:36

Glad you phoned op. Do update us when you have been. We like to be able to tell you I told you so! Grin
