I was in GPs surgery this morning, he'd gone away so a stand in doctor

Yes, it's rude, but she said you'd 'probably' need an op, presumably you need the X-ray results first. perhaps she wasn't expecting you to ask questions about something that hadn't been confirmed yet? And combined with being a stand in, maybe she didn't actually know the details?

She could have been a bit nicer though, maybe said something like 'we'll cross that bridge when we come to it' rather than pushing you out the door!

Yes, that's rude. If I was told I was going to have a minor operation, I'd probably be quite anxious and ask the same questions as you. She sounds patronising and even if she was in a rush, that doesn't sound necessary.
In our local surgery we have some brilliant doctors and others who act like you're bothering them if you've booked a valid appointment.

Could she have maybe misheard you?

I think she misheard you- that would be really rude!

If you're having x-rays and blood tests, presumably you need to go back for a review with all the results and at that point the need for further tests, operations etc would be discussed in light of your results.

She probably felt it was unnecessary to spend time discussing a hypothetical situation that may never occur. If you were asking these questions as you were leaving, presumably your appointment was over and she didn't want to get into a long debate and end up running late.

How rudely or politely it was managed, none of us can say. There are ways of politely winding up an interview, but some people are resistant to the cues and do actually need a "let's leave things there for now" with a big handshake, hat plonked on head, door open and to be gently escorted out of the room or they'd still be there three hours later - I'm sure you're not one of those people, but they do exist.

Pretty rude, yeah.

She might have had house calls to go on plus loads of admin from the morning surgery(or afternoon) a surgery can leave you with 45-60minutes admin to do depending on how many people we have seen. It's not great to hurry people out your room but there will have been times when we have all done this inadvertently. (Or maybe she was dying for a pee 😂)

Yes it was rude. She shouldn't have raised the possibility of an operation if she didn't want to answer basic questions about it. She should really have just asked you to make an appointment to come back and discuss the results.

Lesson for her - don't speculate.

It's rude regardless of how busy or not she was, she should have answered your question or said 'it would be better to discuss that when you come back for the results'. But the fact she didn't acknowledge your question at all does make me wonder whether she just didn't hear you and the drawn out 'bye' was just an absent minded, not paying attention, kind of thing.

forty beacause i was the last one in the waiting room and her receptionist locked the doors. I do appreciate if she was very busy but I was just shocked to hear that "bye" the way she said it. I hadnt kept her long, I can't have been in her surgery longer than 5 minutes. Far quicker than her other patients I'd say.

It does sound like she was a bit rude windmills but if it was the end of the day she might have been desperate to pick up a child/catch a train/go to the loo/let the other staff away/quickly get in a phone call before somewhere closed.

she's called a locum

if she managed to fit taking a blood test and ordering xrays, she would have used up most of the 10 mins allocated per patient.

it is hard sometimes to finish talking to someone and as a locum she cant necessarily say "come back and see me" if she is only filling in. and it sounds rude to say "ask Dr Usualdoctor any further questions" or "I have no more time". She cant have ended consultation well as you wouldnt be on mumsnet if she had!

It does sound a little rude from what you say. She may be rude or she may have misheard you and not realised you wanted an answer.

On a lighter note, I'm reminded of the old saying that it is only "minor surgery" when it is happening to someone else

Maybe that's just her way, I don't know. I was in a fair bit of pain though at the time so perhaps I was being overly sensitive.
