Can they make me work Saturdays?

Have beenworkung full te since june. There is talk of my place of work opening all day Saturday (currently opens just Saturday morning with skeleton staff). Its been on the cards for a while.

My current hours are 40 hours over four days. My contract says between Monday to Saturday 40 hours.

I don't mind working on a rota but it could mean 1. in 3 wheras other members of staff would be1in 7.

I would rather spread it so that its 1 in 5 as im sure my 3 other colleagues would. I am not sure what staff5levels needed asdepends on what services offered.

There is to be a meeting next week to discuss it.

Where do i stand? i really don't want to work one in three . am not currently on the weekend rota. I am "unqualified " but will be training and expect to and accept being on main rota then.

Also as this would mean hours going over 40 would we have to have a day off in week? i would prefer extra money.

This would be better placed in Employment but the answer is yes- your contract says your hours (40 each week) can be spread across 6 days.So long as they are complying with the working time regs there's no issue.

As you've only been employed since June you may find it difficult to get flexible working approved if they want force the issue.

Without seeing the full contract it's hard to fully advise but on the information given; if your contract says Monday to Saturday 40 hours, then unless there is specific provision about it, then they generally have the right to set the rotas as they see fit.

The only thing you may have to watch for is how they break it down and where they put in extra hours. I suggest you look up and make yourself fully familiar with the Working Time Regulations. This provides not only that they can't make you work more than 48 hours in a week, but it also outlines the law in terms of days off, breaks, etc... So for example if they tried to make you work too many days in a row without a day off... or increased your hours regularly about 48 hours a week, you could refuse and they can't do anything about it.

That's a very quick answer - you need to look carefully at your contract, and familiarise yourself with your legal rights. The WTR is a good place to start as some employers can be very sneaky with rotas etc.

Thanks - it has been on the cards for a while and whilst im.not thrilled its quite common in this profession so i won't refuse but just want to have a fair rota.

We regularly work overtime . i usually clock.up at least 2 hours but can be alot more. How would that affect things if that particular week was my weekend?
we get double time for hours worked over 40 at present unless already on weekend rota which is then 4 hours normal then double after that.

Contract simply states hours 40. monday to Saturday.

I don't see how they can make this work if yhey had to give time off during the week rather than it being overtime. Not sure there is mention of overtime in contract actually. must dig it out.

Ah yes, the pizza is the same size whether you divide it into 5 or 7 just the slices are smaller if it's 7.

If your contract says 40 hours Monday-Saturday, they can absolutely make you work all day. They could make you work every Saturday if they wanted, so long as you only worked 40 hours across the six days.
