Maybe it's part of McD customer service training? I was also called madam by a young lad last time I went through a McD drive through. I got asked for ID trying to buy filter tips in Waitrose the same week though so in my mind the two have cancelled each other out and I'm in some magic space between young and old (or possibly deluded... aged 33)

Wait till you are out somewhere and someone says to their child 'mind that lady there' or 'that woman is next' rather than 'girl'. That's been happening to me for years and still gets me every time.

oh a young foreign girl in starbucks did this to me. she'd learned english in america i think and she was mamming away and yet couldn't give me my coffee in a real cup like i asked. I am embarrassed to say I said at the end ''you can stop calling me mam and you can give me that coffee in a real cup''. They did have them. It wasn't at the airport. I'd told her I wasn't having it to go.

I use mam for mum. If there is no distinction in how it's pronounced, how am I to know someone isn't calling me mum? Stupid queen didn't think that through, did she, huh?
