I'm a member of a local Facebook group for a hobby I do. Few too many 'huns' for my taste but it's handy for information. Somebody was asking for advice on taking up the hobby and people replied, generally gushing about their club/teacher etc. Person thanked them all, life went on. Then yesterday (about a month later), this appeared:

Found reading these comments quite enlightening - I"d suggest you may be better contacting some of the Professional societies like XXX or YYY to get some accurate information.

Now I read this as being sarcastic, but a lot of the previous commenters have liked it. Am I too cynical after being on here? That would not be a compliment if it appeared on AIBU!

Yes he's taking the piss. The people liking it presumably agree that the info given is wrong/inaccurate?

No, they're the people who commented on it before with details of where they do the hobby - that's what I couldn't understand!

He's definitely saying that the information people have given is not accurate.

The people liking probably didn't read carefully.

They think he is saying
"here is another source of information"

but he is actually saying
"you are all talking bollocks, if you want the real information you have to go here".

'Quite enlightening' and 'I'd suggest...' do sound a little sarcastic to me, but it may well have been meant with good intentions, just rather poorly written.

I think it's very poor sarcasm, I've seen better. Pretty sure it's sarcasm though

I don't think he's being sarcastic though. Sarcastic would be saying "Thank you all for the wonderful advice. So pleased I found this group which knows better than the professional societies."

I think he's trying to gently say not all the advice given here is correct, just be aware.
I suspect the likers are agreeing with him, in saying don't take advice from here as totally read. Isn't it routine on these sort of groups to have someone who speaks knowledgably but totally inaccurately, but no one ever challenges.

I read it as the above posts are opinion, go here for facts.

Well, quite. I was worried that after being on here too much I was incapable of reading a perfectly helpful comment with giving it sarky overtones.

I was trying to convey the niche-ness of the page without giving the actual group away

But the plot thickens, because I've been stalking guess who is the only underwater volleyball coach in Chichester and its environs registered with with both of those professional bodies?

Yes I think he is being sarcastic, but it has gone straight over the heads of the people who 'liked' it.

Is the the Chichester French Scrabble club? That definitely exists!
