TV License. AIBU to think it should be pay per view?

Before I get flamed I pay my license. Always have. However, I rarely watch TV, probably about 15 times a year. I watch things on Amazon though. WIBU to think it would be much fairer to divide the fee by 365 and pay for the days you actually watch?

I don't have a bbc licence.
It was easy for me to drop it, I would rather buy the telly I like than pay for Eastensers ten nights per week.

I'd like that. I'd also like to just pay for the occasional article in the FT. I wish there was a micro-payment account that I could put money into in advance, & then just confirm payments, say 30p for 500 words, or 30p for 10 minutes broadcast, etc. I don't understand why we still have these 3-12 month commitment subscription models.

As long as it's divided by 365 and can be tracked whenever someone watches OR listens to BBC radio, then YANBU.

I will happily pay my entire licence fee just for Radio 4.

Actually, sod that. I will happily pay my entire licence fee just for the rare occasion I hear Neil Nunes doing the Shipping Forecast just before bed.

It would probably cost too much to administer, or be poor value for users. You can buy things off iplayer at the moment and it's about £2 an episode, you only need a couple of things a week and you've paid your licence fee anyway.

I think it would be impossible to run the scheme like that.
Pay per episode might be possible, but I'm guessing the BBC want the money upfront or guaranteed at least.

YY to this including radio. I assume BBC News / Sport sites would be pay per view too?

I'd pay my entire licence fee for the radio in the car and CBeebies.

We don't have a license for that reason. We watch so little to we decided to just not bother got rid of the freebies box and just watch Amazon.
I'd love even a pay per episode option. There is maybe one or two series a year I'd consider watching and would pay for it in the same way I already pay for a streamed on demand service.

No, because the people who would pay the most would probably be older or isolated individuals, and those that pay the least would be the ones most able to afford the licence.

As well as having to ration your heating, can you imagine saying to yourself "I can't afford today's Corrie"...when you might not have seen or spoken to another human being for days.

Just make the BBC commercial and scrap the licence altogether.

I can see where you are coming from fuzzy but those you mentioned already pay the fee so they wouldn't be any worse off. I'm not for pay per view as such more pay by the day.

But to make up the shortfall on those that don't pay the full fee, surely the BBC would have to increase the amount paid for a full year. Always, if one person pays less, someone else has to pay more.

We got rid of our TV licence after the dog chewed through the outside satellite wires for our Freesat and we realised that actually we never watch live telly, and don't miss it. We've got Netflix, Amazon Prime and Now TV and much prefer it.

A daily or per view service would have to be dearer per session than the outright annual fee to cover the additional admin costs.

And definitely no to a commercial version. On commercial station we now almost always record them and then watch them back later so we can skip the adverts. And that's bad enough and a faff to do. I like commercial free TV and I am happy to pay up front for it. When you go abroad more than half the time watching many channels is dominated by adverts. It's bad enough on our current commercial channels so wouldn't want to go that way with bbc too.

There is already an option to opt out.

What would be useful though would be if you've not paid you simply can't see it - like with sky channels you haven't paid for.

I wish, apart from countrywise i dont watch any bbc programmes... There must be a way of blocking bbc channels...

oreos I think that is a very good idea.

I only watch Countrywise, Match of the Week, Mrs Brown's Family, Gardeners' Garden, Call the Obstetrician and CBabies.

I've long said I want a two week TV license just for Wimbledon. Although, I'd buy the Olympics weeks too... I watch a little more than I used to!

I'd happily pay a radio licence if there was such a thing.

There isn't, so I'll listen to the radio free and pay for Netflix. No licence required.

Id rather it be opt in like everything else. I would like to choose whether i want to pay to recieve bbc content or whether i am happy to go without it.

Agree with this tbh. I know it seems petty complaining about 5 quid a week or whatever it works out as..and I never had a problem until a few months back when I worked out our bill account wrong and the TV license DD bounced and within a week we had 3 calls, and a letter threatening to prosecute. Is this really necessary? One bounced DD in 10 years...also 2 of the threatening calls and the letter came AFTER we had noticed the mistake and paid by card...was rather annoying

I dunno.... I rarely watch TV , I only watched star plus but I got rid of sky recently, but still I don't mind the licence fee. By the time I factor in all the times I listen to a bbc radio station, or flick to the bbc news then I think it's worth the fee , but that's my opinion.

As an emmigrant I would bloody love to be able to buy the 2 or 3 shows that I want to watch! Sewing Bee, 2012, W1A, Downton (itv i know but same principle applies).
