Driving with my family whilst on holiday we pass a lady standing by the road side with a sign that said just that. I was worried it was a cry for help.

I can't stop thinking of her...

We passed her too quickly for me to think but as I looked back I saw a van slowing near her and then she was out of sight.

I was hoping by chance she was on here and I hope that she is safe.

I think you may be over-thinking this. If she needed help it would be easier, quicker and less dangerous to go to a police station, community centre, shops - anywhere but by the side of the road hitchhiking!
She was probably on an adventure. I wouldn't recommend doing it that way to anyone - never mind a woman on her own - but that's up to her isn't it.

You might be right.... I haven't seen a hitch hiker for years!
