To be so bored with the olympics

Really so these people have basically spent hours doing a hobby they enjoy. Why does that make them heroes or role models anymore than footballers or cricket players.

Happy for them and all that but what a fuss.

So glad my kids were never that obsessed and generally only joined things to get the uniform 'dd ballet/tap' or just kick a ball around the park.

I can't imagine why any parent would get up at 4am on a Saturday to drive miles to any competition once let alone frequently. Ffs weekends are for chilling.

Nowt wrong with a park kick about or a family swim and them home for DVDs and mummy/daddy wine time.

And to add insult to injury was woken up at 4am by Sky app telling me some bloke had won gold. Who fucking cares aye. Wink

You will prob get a roasting but am inclined to agree apart from the big ticket things like running etc. I know a woman whose stepson made it to the the commonwealth games. She spent her life getting up at stupid o clock, driving him to training, sitting around in her car before taking him to school and then going to work then doing the whole shebang after work. Just watching him swim up and down a pool!!! Don't think he ever even got an Olympic medal. Not even sure he got a common wealth one. Now he doesn't even talk to her as she split up with his knob head dad. What a waste of her life!!

  1. they don't ask to be 'role models' they are pursuing their chosen to pursue their sport at the highest level after devoting years to honing their natural talent. Few get rich off the back of it.

  2. I guess from your perspective it was 'lucky' that your children didn't show the aptitude or application for top level sport. It would be a pity if they did and you thwarted their efforts as taking them was too much effort and required you to do something.

3). Turn your phone off or disable the app if you don't want to be disturbed in the night: easy.

Luckily for the world not everyone is like you or we would never have achieved anything.

I hope that should your DC decide that they are passionate about something you would think nothing of getting up at whatever time it took to help them achieve.

I see why people would do it, wanting to be the best at something, to achieve their dream and all that.

What I think is rotten is the Olympics as such now. Billions wasted on stadiums that even now aren't full, many just thrown at things that will never get used, extravagant ceremonies and sponsorships. It's obscene.

I think being the best at something is quite an incredible goal.

I also don't like the Olympics though.

My main issue is with the expenditure and extravagance of what is essentially a glorified sports day.
But it's once every 4 years so I can't get too bothered about it tbh.

I really enjoyed watching the fencing yesterday, and Rugby Sevens is ace. Love the diving and swimming.

I don't think they are heroes or anything. I think the dedication they have is amazing and weird and very very unusual, but I enjoy watching some of it.

Such a shame those stadiums are so unfilled

I love the minority sports...judo. weightlifting etc. Partner and daughter participate at a minor level. There's no huge sponsorship, just people training hard. A couple of weeks every four years isn't too much. I appreciate some people hate sport though. I hate soaps, talent and reality shows and they are on nearly every bloody nightSad

chikara they were and are passionate about lots of things but thankfully none of it involved me in getting up at stupid o clock and taking over our whole weekend. Get off your high horse.

Of course the post is slightly tongue in cheek but I do wonder about the siblings of these medal winners and if so much parental time was taken up with the one child to achieve their dream others were less fortunate. Would be interesting to get their Pespective.

I hate the Olympics too, I just couldn't give a fuck. It's tedious. I understand their passion but I don't feel anything when they win. Obviously, they're elated and good for them, they've worked hard.

I just don't care to watch it.

I'm totally disenchanted with these high level sports or high level anything 'cos of the obscene amount of money involved and the drugs / fully legal performance boosters. It's just a question of time until the drug scandals start.

Each to their own but the thing that gets me is when they get sports council funding, or whatever it is, and then go on to make loads of money. They don't have to pay it back but if an 18 year old borrows money to live on when training to be a nurse, doctor, teacher or some other useful profession the money has to be repaid.
