She just told me she asked ds 'do you think daddy misses you' and 'is he alright on his own'?
I mean, why even ask that? I split with his dad over a year ago because he couldn't be arsed with family life.
Ds is staying with my mum & I just know he's going to come back full of worries about dad being on his own & lonely

YANBU. She sounds passive aggressive and irritating.

What can I say in reply one? I could do with a mother on my side but failing that is like her at least to see she's deliberately goading him

OMG she's out of order, your child isn't responsible for whether his father misses him or is lonely. Way to pile some guilt and issues on a little kid grandma!

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing for kids to talk through their worries about these things in case he is worrying about those things so maybe she's coming from a good place, but it's your decision as a parent to decide whether it is a good conversation for your ds and only you know how it would affect him/stir up emotions. Maybe explain you understand she is trying to help (even if she's not it might make her think about things before she speaks) but you would prefer to have those conversations yourself with your son when it is appropriate. I hope she backs off, I think yanbu
