To be worried about holiday'ing in France

I love France- we go on a camping holiday there evert year. But this year I am feeling freaked out (and I don't want to be) about safety issues in the light of everything happening over there. I know I am being irrational and dont want to be affected by terrorists as then they would win but I do feel worried! Aibu?

YANBU - We are going to Normandy tomorrow and its all a bit close to home after the recent attack. However we are still going - we went to Disneyland Paris after the Brussels attack at Easter and security was tight.

We cannot predict anything these days in any part of the world. Just be prepared to be vigilant and have a sort of plan. Ours is to take a child each and peg it!

I know - we are at Omaha Beach but its such a random place where the attack was. It could literally happen anywhere.

Yes, that is all you can do! These attacks are completely unpredictable (as far as the general public are concerned) and I think we unfortunately have to accept the risk if we are to continue to lead a normal, enjoyable life. Spreading fear and causing a reluctance to go out in public is one of the aims the terrorists have and we must try to resist it or lose our freedom and quality of life. Remember that, statistically, it is still a very tiny risk.

We have just returned from France, staying not far from Nice. It certainly brought the whole thing closer but it would never deter me from returning to France. It is a wonderful country, despite a minority's wish to ruin its way of life for everyone.

YANBU if it were me for the first time in my life I would be avoiding mainland europe totally because if everything that is happening. But then this means the bastards have won....I hate all this that is happening, these people are pure evil

I'm going to a wedding near Rouen on Friday. It did make me think but what can you do? Still going. Maybe not spending Saturday in Rouen as planned as I guess they will not be in the mood for tourists.

Oh god, I hadn't heard till reading this thread .my heart dropped when I saw "near Rouen" and then further still when I went to BBC news. This is exactly where we are staying en route to the Dordogne.

My teen dc is due to go to Belgium via France with school. Getting worried about letting them go now. We went to Disney this year, I am more worried about travelling to disney. Disney security is very tight even before all this.

We are in France now, the weather is beautiful, everyone is behaving normally and we are having an amazing holiday as we always do. It could happen anywhere go on your holiday and have a lovely time.

Cooroo I guess they will not be in the mood for tourists.
Anyone in a shop, restaurant hotel, tourist attraction would rather you went in and spent money. Do you think they'd rather you left them in peace?

We are in France now-in Marseille-and life seems to be carrying on pretty much as normal here, although there is a heightened state of alert (eg more visible police/military presence, bag checks in shopping centres, we were evacuated from a shopping centre in Lyon last week). YANBU to think of your safety but YWBU to let the actions of a few people stop you going on holiday to one of the safest countries in the world. Try not to worry and enjoy your holiday.

It is worrying but it could happen anywhere in Europe - even here.
I would be a bit apprehensive but would go anyway.
You cannot avoid everywhere - shopping malls, cities, towns, All are targets.

We returned this morning from a week camping in rural France. It was 'business as usual'. Met a couple on the ferry who had just spent several days in Paris. They said bags were being checked in shops and there was increased police presence. The only police we saw were guiding caravans heading straight. Into a traffic jam. Being aware of the incidents in France and Germany didn't stop it being an enjoyable and relaxing week.

If you stop going they evil has won.

Do we need a MN flag for our cars, it appears everyone will be mumsnetting from the Dordogne in the near future .

I'm really, really looking forward to our holiday, hopefully going to have as much cheese and wine and lush bread/pastries as is humanly possible and fingers crossed some warm sunshine too. Oh dear god, I nearly typed 'keep calm and carry on' sorry everyone .

We are in France now. We are staying near St Maxime. We arrived 2 days after the Nice massacre. It is business as usual here. Plenty of police around but no more than last year.

We move on to Paris on Saturday and will stay there for 4 days. If anything you just need to be alert and not let your guard down.

Had a conversation Wih a woman at a bus stop last week. We were talking about holidays - she's off to St Lucia for a family birthday. I said I was off to southern Crete in the autumn. She asked wasn't I worried about going there. Did I miss a big terror activity there or something? I didn't have a clue why she said that, never even crossed my mind.
On the other hand DD has just gone off to Cololgne for a week. I'm not worried exactly, but will be soo glad when she's home.

No,OP you're not BU, it's totally understandable but don't let it out you off your holidays. It will be fine.

You are right to be cautious, but I've just got back from a few days at Disney Paris & you'll find once you're there everything is fine & people are living their lives like we are here. Don't let it stop you going & having a great holiday!

The next attack could be in your home town/city. There's really no way of knowing. Live your life. Bon voyage!

I live in France, work near a very famous tourist attraction & take the underground every day and it feels very remote, the possibility of there being an attack....honestly, please just enjoy your holiday! Imagine cancelling, sitting at home and after two weeks realising nothing had happened and you'd missed a potentially fab time because you were overcautious....
France is not desolate and war torn I promise, it feels very normal where I am.
Plus, France needs its neighbours right now - it's not by turning away and not pumping money into the tourist industry that you're helping.

Had a bit of an oldschool experience when I went to London on the coach recently and apart from passport control there was NO security. My bag wasn't checked, my ticket wasn't checked at all on the first journey....I simply walked on and sat down. If anyone knows why they don't do security checks on Megabus I'd be very curious to know the reason!
I'm going again next month and I'd rather stand in a queue for a bit than risk getting in a confined space with bags that haven't been scanned tbh...
