DD (3) has chicken pox. The spots came out on Saturday so 5 days ago. They are mostly crusted over but not completely. Its been a difficult week especially with the heat. We're both going a little stir crazy. Would it be acceptable to go out today? Not anywhere crowded but maybe a walk in a country park or NT estate?

Yes, but carry a handbell and shout "Unclean! Unclean!" if others approach.

branofthemist · 21/07/2016 08:58

Personally, I wouldn't. For the sake of child (and adults) who have suppressed immune systems. I can put up with a few days of cabin fever rather than risk making someone really ill.

BusStopBetty · 21/07/2016 09:00

A run about somewhere open air, with no other people, is absolutely fine. Obviously avoid things like play equipment to be on the safe side. But a run down a deserted beach or field? Fine. Can you go really early or late?

PurpleDaisies · 21/07/2016 09:01

No-I wouldn't. You know he is still infectious. You don't know if you'll run into someone with a weakened immune system.

It must be rotten being at home but for the sake of one more day, do the right thing and don't risk someone vulnerable' sheath.

Fortybingowings · 21/07/2016 09:08

Yes get out, somewhere open and airy, not supermarket or soft play though.

sh700 · 21/07/2016 09:33

Wouldn't dream of soft play! Thanks for the replies. I think we'll aim for another day at home but head to the woods later if it all gets too much.

Do you know of any other kids with pox?

I had it the same time as my friend, so we played in either garden together.

WorraLiberty · 21/07/2016 12:28

I would.

If you're not using public transport and you're just walking in the open air (not visiting coffee shop/gift shop etc), then I don't see the harm.

MiddleClassProblem · 21/07/2016 12:32

It's transferred by touch so I reckon you're pretty safe going for a little walk. Just make sure he doesn't touch too much or anyone lol

MollyTwo · 21/07/2016 12:33

Yanbu, poor little guy must be wanting to get some fresh air. A nice walk and play in the park will do you both good.

Gottagetmoving · 21/07/2016 12:41

Just read this :
"The person with chickenpox is contagious from the beginning of the illness (up to 2 days before the spots appear) until about 5 days after the first spots appear. So long as there are no new blisters or moist crusts on spots, the person will not be contagious even if there are still crusts on the skin"

I think it will be fine. I would take him out

sh700 · 21/07/2016 16:21

Thanks everyone. We've survived the day with duplo, colouring, play doh and a bit too much paw patrol. Will probably head out tomorrow.
