To bloody love budget hotels

Like premier inn, travelodge, ibis etc.

I have to travel lots for work and have a choice of accommodation booked for me or be given the equivalent in cash and book it myself.

Budget hotels are absolutely brilliant!!! Clean room, often conveniently located and, bonus, some extra left over to put towards a nice holiday.

BUT, I do admit to being a bit embarrassed if colleagues ask me where I'm staying and just mumble something about a little boutique hotel locally and quickly change the subject.

AIBU to be embarrassed and should I be out and proud to wave the premier inn flag?!

So do you get to keep the difference in cash?

You get an allowance, you go super cheap but keep the excess of the allowance?

I love Travelodge and won't stay anywhere else.
So long as I have a warm, secure room, a comfy bed, a shower, a toilet and a kettle I'm happy

I love Premier inns. Cheap if you book in advance.Clean and comfortable with no frills but Im only going to sleep in the room not live in it. If there's a problem they are usually very helpful and the good nights sleep guarantee means what it says and an instant refund is offered if you have to complain.

I would be out and proud about my love for premier . Do you get to pocket the difference in tarrifs? If so even more reason to love them.

We often use them when we go away for the weekend with the DDs (as thread counts and pillow menus are wasted on them, at the moment).

They're always very clean, black out curtains, the beds are so comfy, showers are powerful, and haven't yet used one that doesn't seem freshly refurbished.

What's not to like?

Crunchymum - yes, I get the choice of having a naaaice hotel and have it booked for me (my company gets favourable rates) or an allowance to choose and book myself. The deal is, if I do the work and book, I'm allowed to keep the difference.

I totally agree! Especially automated check in. What are the zillion mouse clicks in a five star check in for?

Just spent a nice night at the Travelodge on the M6 Lancaster. Seriously. Had a nice view and everything (luckily facing the other way to the motorway).

Who do you work for if you are allowed to keep the difference?

Stayed at a Premier Inn near Stanstead and was v impressed with it. Nice room, restaurant, bar and great breakfast. So cheap and got a great deal on the parking whilst on hols too!

I love Premier Inn too! Haven't had as many great experiences in Travelodges but I'd stay there again too.

The kids always eat huge breakfasts in PI too, which set them up for the day.

Ragwort - I work in entertainment. We get a per diem and expenses allowance when we're travelling.

I love Premier Inn and Ibis. Very comfortable mattresses at both.

OP I do agree with you, YANBU. I like a hotel where everything just works.

Your post reminded me of a conversation I had with a colleague once:

He had stayed in a particular hotel for work purposes and had absolutely hated it:- the room was quirky so he couldnt find everything straight away, the staff insisted on talking to him, the food in the restaurant was different and interesting rather than comfortable and familiar.

His parents stayed in the same hotel for a short break and absolutely loved it:- the room was quirky so they didnt find everything straight away, the staff talked to them, the food was interesting and different....

I really don't see what naice hotels do to charge their rates when compared to a TL or PI.

I have stayed in some posh hotels that were shabbier compared to TL/PI.

As long as they are clean, comfy, have ensuite, kettle,TV ...what more is required.

I love Premier Inn. Stayed in a fantastic one in Halifax last weekend. Room was huge, massive floor to ceiling Windows one one side, a balcony (albeit locked), comfy bed, clean, telly etc. All for £42 a room. I've paid three times that and been deeply disappointed.

I like PI too, clean comfy bed and free Wi-Fi. We use them when we visit my parents, we avoid one as it right on the main road and very noisy, but other ones we have stayed at on main roads have been fine. We even got our stay free once, laughed about the fact I had been disturbed by the people upstairs really loud sex, and they just refunded me.

Previously we used holiday inn express, they were always fine too, but the one we used became a premier inn.

YANBU and that you get an allowance to spend as you wish. My work uses a crappy outsourced travel company whose speciality appears to be choosing the worst hotel in the worst location charging the highest price for. We would save so much money if we just went back to the old way of people booking their own hotels on the internet and putting receipts in but this is 'better' somehow.

Travelodge are in the process of a big refurb programme so are a lot bette than they used to be. I like them because you know what you are getting and that there is no risk of sheets and blankets on the bed, which I simply cannot stand.

Premier Inn and the like are always clean and comfortable and not twee, frilly or old fashioned, which a lot of hotels are.

Aurorie - I'm actually really interested to know why you prefer PI to TL.
