Having experienced the damage the new SATs have caused both as a teacher of year 2 and as a parent of an able year 5 child who has been told that she is 'working towards' this article wound me up.

Schools have worked incredibly hard to get children to the new standard despite the goalposts being moved frequently and to blame teachers is totally unfair.

Exactly what I expect. Just scares me the amount of people who read this sort of crap and believe it.

The well of antipathy towards teachers is very deep - a few days on AIBU will convince you of that. You don't need to look very far to see where that antipathy comes from.

The DM generally hate teachers (part of an ever growing hate list of various groups in society) so will look for any opportunity to put the boot in. If people are too fucking thick to see that then pity them as that is who they are in the world.

Same qualifications as any other journalist probably. Perhaps a correspondent specialising in education issues?

What do you want exactly? Only news and viewpoints you agree with being published? There's another thread on here complaining that public sector workers who do their jobs so badly they're struck off should have the details of their cases suppressed.

It actually scares me that so many people are so desperate to gag any sort of reporting that doesn't fit into their own narrow approved (normally left wing) narrative. It's fucking dangerous.

No. I don't want only want reporting that supports my views. I want to see reporting that gives a balanced view, not reporting that's based on the opinion of a parent who names their child Ludo and comparisons with Singapore and no other country. This report was not balanced - it was an unjustified attack on the whole of the teaching profession.

So you want press censorship to ensure that it is "balanced"?

Unless you have been living under a rock for the past hundred years, you'll be aware that newspapers are not obliged to be "balanced" in any democracy, and claims that the newspapers are "truthful" happen only into despotic regimes. Newspapers (like other media) can print whatever they like, subject to the laws of obscenity, libel, contempt of court and the official secrets act (and all of those are misused more than they protect anyone). That has its downsides, but nothing like as many downsides as having a state-run, state-approved "balanced" media.

Newspapers are not balanced. They don't have to be and they aren't. They write what their readers want to read, so that they (the readers) will continue to buy them. I know it's trite, but the bottom line is that newspapers are businesses and not news reporting organs. If you want that go to the BBC they are required by law to be impartial and balanced.

Because censorship is never a good thing. Is this the sort of newspaper you would want your wife or servants to read?

As a teacher l honestly do not know how teachers in the UK stand the system ye have. I read here about teachers doing 70 hour weeks and yet ye are at the bottom of that PISA table for maths. Ireland is at number 15. But we are in danger of following ye to the bottom as our government constantly brings in more paperwork. For goodness sake why can't they let the teachers actually teach.
Saying that l heard a while back that the government in Korea had to ban children from having grinds after 12 at night and they are about number 4!!
My dm was in school 70 years ago with no intense paperwork for the teachers and she knew enough at 11 to do Gsce. She had amazing general knowledge, maths ability, perfect grammar and spelling etc. All without any books at home and uneducated parents with very little interest in school they were so busy trying to survive.Now kids know very little with all that intense teaching. What is wrong?

In case you hadn't noticed, newspapers have massively lost influence since the rise of the Internet and smart phones. People consume news from a variety of sources and generally self select what bias that reporting has. It's not just the right wing either. A lot of Brexit reporting in the Guardian has contained misinformation and hysteria and crossed the line into self parody over the last few weeks. Should they be forced to offer a 'balanced' perspective too? Because you only seem to be interested in opinions you personally don't like being censored 'balanced'.

'Balanced' reporting is almost impossible to achieve. The BBC supposedly attempts to do it but neither left nor right is satisfied. It's impossible to achieve and would also hugely stifle debate.

I believe that although there is some truth to this it has always been a convenient get out clause for the left's failure to be electable.

For example, the Sun likes to say 'It was the Sun wot done it', but there's a pretty strong counter argument that they're good at leaving it so late they know which way the wind is blowing and hitching their wagon to the winning team.

Also, social media has a far, far deeper penetration than the print press these days and is hugely dominated by left wing viewpoints. But they've totally failed to translate that into winning any actual elections.

I actually think in a lot of ways the right wing press is actually the outlet providing the 'balance' needed because of left wing success in suppressing opposing viewpoints in public life and large swathes of broadcasting media for example.

People now aren't as interested in learning, neither adults or kids. The actual pursuit of knowledge and expertise etc is boring. Gove tapped into a very real "thing" when he said people in this country are sick of experts.
