Just parked in a car park, admittedly the spaces are pretty small. As I was getting something out of the boot a car pulled in next to us and I noticed that the passenger in the back rested her door on our car. I looked afterward and saw that my car was scratched so I politely said so to the passenger in question. She was pretty annoyed and said she only rested her door gently on our car but there is definitely as scratch.

Then her friend came over and started saying I was waiting for them and deliberately wanted to cause problems. I am abroad and when he heard my accent be started talking in English (I speak my country's language fluently I just have an accent) - that made me feel flustered. I told him I'd be willing to accept my mistake and their case but he just kept repeating that I was being unreasonable and deliberately causing problems.

It's only a small scratch and they made me feel so stupid by complaining about it but it's my husband's new car and he definitely does not want it scratched. Admittedly it it was my car I wouldn't have cared but still.

Was I being unreasonable to say something? I felt I had to.

I don't see how resting a car door against your car could cause a scratch. Are you sure it wasn't there already or isn't a mark that could rub off?

No, not unreasonable, but are you 100% sure the scratch wasn't there before? Either way, just dab a little bit of T Cut on the scratch and it will go away. Tight car parking spaces are so annoying!

No it wasn't there before and it is a scratch. Maybe we can repair it ourselves but the car is new so that's a bit annoying

These things happen in car parks, especially when spaces are tight. Sometimes you can't even get out of your car without touching the next with your door.

Unfortunately if you want to keep new cars immaculate then you really need to keep it out of car parks, but for most people this isn't realistic!

If the scratch came about from someone just resting their door on yours then it will T-Cut out no problem.

Yeah you're probably right. But as its my DH's car I felt I had to say something.

Not having a go OP, but what did you expect them to do? Would you be prepared to go through the insurance to have it repaired?

Problem stems from cars getting wider but the regulations for parking bay sizes is from the 70`s. T-cut will remove scratches as said above.

I don't think either of you were being unreasonable to be honest. I can see why you're annoyed but I also think that wider cars and smaller spaces can make it very difficult to prevent this. Realistically, cars are going to get scratched.

yanbu, no one should bash cars getting in & out of spaces.

I'm saying that as occasional offender of resting doors, but I would apologise not hassle you if I had done it to your car.

This is a good reason to park in far corner of the carpark & walk an extra 30 seconds. Most people are lazy & park closer to the door, so far corners is safer for one's own car.

The problem with resting is as you move around in the car and get out the car goes up and down so the door goes up and down on your car - that causes the damage not the resting.

You were right to say something, they were idiots. Let's face it if they said 'I'm so sorry it's these tight spaces, I thought it would be OK"
You'd have probably said "I know it's bad design, don't worry I'm sure it will polish"

Tickle that's exactly right. The up and down movement as you get out of the car causes the scratch. I saw someone do it to my car from a distance and it was a quite considerable scratch that didn't polish out. It was there till I sold it. YANBU.

Yes that's what happened, she rested her door against our car but then put her weight on the door when getting out. I do acknowledge that our car is pretty massive, but the space on the other side of their car was free. She could have got out on the other side.

Anway she gave me her number so I guess we can see if we can repair it and if not we'll see if someone can do it cheaply and sort it out between ourselves but I doubt it will come to that. Agree that there's no point in getting insurance involved.

I think it was their attitude which shocked me. She was ok but her friend was aggressive.

No one has the right to 'rest' their car doors on your car!!! I wouldn't dare, no matter where I was!!! If it was me I'd have gone mad! How incredibly rude. Their response should have been "sorry, we shouldn't have been so stupid"
