To want to move back to UK from France ?

Hi all
Am I being unreasonable to want to move back to the UK after 12 years of living in France ? We've got 3 children aged 10, 8 & 5. They were born here (Normandy) and are completely bilingual. My reasons are :

  • husband (plumber) has transferable skills
  • the kids are not yet at secondary school age (1 year to go for eldest)
  • we're worried about long-term issues eg cost of healthcare, employability of kids etc. We've worked hard on doing up our house here, but even if we can sell it, we'd only have approx. 80k. It feels like 'now or never' for us. We haven't paid UK tax or NI since 2004. Would we get child benefit ? Where would we stand re. housing ? If I could get work eg caring, teaching assistant etc., would I need to document where I've lived as a record so I can get a CRB ? This could be a nightmare with paperwork here

Thanks in advance for any advice / experiences. My mind's been all over the place since last Friday, we never expected the Brexit result

Why move though? Why do you suddenly feel isolated? I don't get it. I'd have no problem going back to France. Unemployment is high becuase jobs are highly secure and benefits too high. but there is work for those ready to work, plenty of it. social sohesion is no different to here and the economy is fine. it is a great country thank you very much ;)

Especially with the Brexit you're better off where you are, watching from afar :)

Hi,

I know this is a very old post but I was wondering if you moved back or not? I decided to leave the UK when this thread stated.. Like you I moved to France originally in 2004 moving back in 2014 but decided to move back after my Divorce.. I have days like now that I am not sure if I did the right things I have no close family ties in the UK but like yourself my 3 children who are the same age as yours, were born in France.. There are pros and cons where ever you are.. Though the know its a year since you posted I also live in Normandy about 1/2 hour from Cherbourg, maybe you would like to PM me..

Apologies for the terrible grammar! ☺️ far to early to be posting .. They really should put an edit button on here.

If you could bear it OP I'd wait a few years to see how Brexit/UK economy/UK political situation pans out. There is going to be a lot of change in the next few years in the UK and who knows what things will look like afterwards. I don't think you'll find it harder to get back to the UK though, if you're both British born citizens you can always return - it's just a question of what you'll be returning to!

I lived my whole adult life in France, I was there 25 years. I moved back to the UK last year and I have no regrets at all, on the contrary. I was pretty much an 'alien' for 3 months, with regards to chuld benefit, phone contract, etc. But it didn't take long at all to settle in. I had never paid NI in the UK but had no problem with our paperwork (far less than the French system and all their paperwork). I literally didn't even know who to call to get electricity 😂😂 but I have never been happier. Go with or gut
