To think that we need a general election

The recent referendum has shown that our current politicans are totally out of touch with many voters. David Cameron is resigning and I feel that all of us should get to choose the next PM to get us through Brexit. (There can even be an option via the ballot box to vote for a party that promises not to enact article 50 as the election is not legally binding.)

I don't understand this call to "elect your own PM". I thought that this country people voted for their own MP, MPand the head of the party that has the majority gets to be PM. And that head is elected by the party members. Isn't that right ?

So, what am I missing ? How.do people intend to choose their next PM?

The current bunch of MPs are totally out of touch with the people. The reality is that people tend to vote for a party when choosing their MP. The conservative party led by Michael Gove would be incredibly scary.

Labour is not much better. A whole bunch of MPs want to oust Corbyn even though he has been selected by party members.

A huge number of people have signed a petition for a second referendum or asking MPs to vote to ignore the referendum. If a newly elected govement made a decision to ignore the referendum then it would be slightly less undemocratic.

They cannot ignore it, but they could try and use it as leverage to move the EU in a healthier direction. EU is running scared that this is just the beginning of a break up - if they went in for a bit of reform they might not need to worry.

You cannot undo the Leave vote with a bit of strategic subterfuge. It'll lead to more chaos.

A GE right now would be a fucking disaster. The brexiters mainly voted because they have had decades of feeling financially squeezed and not listened to. When people feel like this they resort to desperate measures such as electing the far right. The best that could happen now would be for the Conservative party to install a strong leader, and for labour and the conservatives to work together (Remainers and brexiters) to secure us the best possible exit from the EU. The in fighting needs to stop now so that we can move forward and, hopefully never see the far right rear its ugly head.

YABU, for two reasons:

1: you may not have noticed but the country is in a bit of a pickle right now. It will pass eventually, the sky will not fall in and the seas will not boil. It if you want to prolong it then the best thing you can do is cause more uncertainty - say by holding a general election!
2: precisely WHO would you vote for? Seriously... Corbyn? ...Don't make me laugh! Farrage? Right.... Just the man to delicately negotiate terms for brexit... Not! Do you even know the name of the Lib Dem's current leader? .. Thought not! The Greens? They can't even run a single fucking local council without bankrupting it with their insane policies... They had control of Brighton (I think) a few years ago and screwed it up so badly that Whitehall had to step in, boot them out and sort things out at considerable expense.

There will be a general election in the next six months with the state of both of the major parties am not sure what good it will do.

What is actual sickening is how many politicians are only concerned about their own elect ability ,they care fuck all for the voters.

Look at whats happened with the Labour party over the last 24 hours trying to over throw JC! They all make me vomit.

This two party system is a joke its the reason you have the likes of Brexit happening people are tired of the bullshit.

There is nobody to vote for! Corbyn doesn't have enough people standing by him to form a cabinet and the torys don't have a leader. There would also be the worry that all the brexiters that don't regret their vote would vote ukip- pm Farage sound good to anyone?

For goodness sake.

A much larger number of people voted for 'out' in an appropriately controlled and overseen election.

You don't like the result. Fine. Lots of people agree with you. But can you hear yourself with your 'a huge number of people signed an online petition asking for the democratic election to be ignored' schtick?

How is the petition more legitimate than the referendum?

How are 3 million people more compelling than 17 million?

What do you think the end result is when Parliament starts ignoring legitimate democratic elections?

It's as though everyone is competing to see who can sound most stupid. And arrogant.

Since the Remain camp seem so obsessed with the accuracy of percentages and how much of Britain they represent... you realise that your "huge number" is actually not even 8% of the electorate? And that's with the generous assumption that everyone who signed the petition is actually eligible to vote.

I don't think a general election is the way to go. It's a simple way of blocking the exit of the EU, but will further destabilise the country.

We can't just keep having votes until it works out that we remain.

The petition will be debated. Nothing will happen, in my opinion. It's a small amount of people in reality. Besides which, if they decided to just not leave the country would end in further shit.

Besides which, no party wants an election right now. They are all a mess at the moment.

Yes I think we need to have one, maybe in the autumn or spring when things have settled down a bit.

If they allowed something as big as the Eu to go to referendum, they can at least let us choose who sees us through it.

you can't pick your own version of democracy. If the vote had been Remain and there had been the same agitation, the whole petition thing would have been mocked and ignored, basically. sadly, we have to run with this and make the best we can.

The petition can only urge discussion, nothing else, it is not a vote. The petion itself has been signed by many who werent entitled to vote and can't be relied on as anything but an indication of unrest and disappointment.

One of the things that adds to my fury, is that im sure many people voted, who had never voted before, who are generally politically ignorant. In a way, we are paying the price for voter apathy and ignorance which has been going on for decades.
