DSS's mother is from an EU country. She's been living (contributing greatly to the community and paying taxes) in the UK for about 20 years and DSS has an EU passport.
Will us leaving the EU affect them? DH has PR and 50/50 although DSS is 16.

No one knows which is why Google is vague. It will be one of the many things that require negotiation. Nothing is going to happen for at least two years whilst they sort out all of the details.

However, she'd be entitled to UK citizenship if she can afford to go through the (expensive) process, and assuming that her country of birth allows dual citizenship - not all do.

I don't know but my guess, depending on what degree of hardliner the next PM turns out to be, that there will be an amnesty for a while and then a gradual squeezing of EU citizens who live here: first the people who are on JSA will have that withdrawn; then the people who get in-work benefits; could it end up with people wanting to remain here having to earn over a certain threshold? I feel very sorry for your DH's ex, my father has lived here for more than 50 years and theoretically is in the same position, as are several of my friends and family members.
