Maybe it is actually capitalism that has failed not democracy

Capitalism derived from a class system whereby the lowly workers at the bottom work to feed the few at the top and keep them in their place of power and wealth.

Historically that was fed directly from an accepted class system where everybody knew their place but more recently with a burgeoning middle class the system started to collapse and the bottom rung needed to be filled from elsewhere and large scale migration was required to keep the rich and powerful in their box. This migration has meant large scale wealth sharing among the lower and middle classes while those at the top get wealthier and wealthier. This has bred huge anger, discontentment and tension between the groups who are most financially and socially vulnerable to this scenario.

Maybe instead of looking at the failings of democracy and why people want to leave the EU to limit migration and reduce the wealth distribution at the bottom we need to look at the huge failings of capitalism and address that instead. AIBU.

And what would your alternative be? Communism? Well that ended well didn't it!

Well I think we can safely say with this vote and the rise of right wing politics across Europe that capitalism has failed too. This vote is in the main borne out of inequality from what I can tell. While the referendum was sparked by the super rich imperialist tories, for one time only the mantle was taken up by huge swathes of the working classes who saw constant threats to their jobs and homes from large scale immigration which everyone says is oh so necessary.

Capitalism and the inequality it props up is completely disenfranchising huge numbers of voters in ever increasing numbers. I don't think communism, there are other economic models, is the only alternative but every man for himself has got us here today.

I don't think democracy be said to fail when we haven't actually tried it.

Trickle down doesn't exist and hence the rich get richer forever. Which I suppose means that capitalism does work well for the 0.1% just not the 99.9%.

I wholeheartedly agree. I am increasingly shocked at the polarisation of wealth. Scare mothering message re leaving and how terrible it will be but I think for millions it's been terrible for sometime and why wouldn't you vote for a major change if you are in this position.......and obscenely amazing for a small few. I note that many of the sanctimonious comments I am reading on social media re the stupid / small minded electorate have all sucked fairly obscene amounts out of the current system.

One person's legitimate and well-informed fear of the approaching cliff is another's fear mongering, I guess. The latter appears blind at best, tbh.

When you don't know if there's a cliff at all, but there's plenty of time to examine the route, buy crampons and abseiling ropes etc even if there is, then yes it does seem like a project fear.

And if you believe in it, then yes it's scary.
