Tenant leaving curtains shut

user1466222549 · 22/06/2016 23:04

I became an accidental landlord about four years ago when we needed to move for work, but couldn't sell the house. We have rented the house to the same person ever since we left.

I keep getting hassled by one of my old neighbours who I have stayed in touch with. She has taken umbrage to the fact that my tenant leaves her lounge curtains closed most of the time. Not quite sure why this is such an issue to our old neighbour. She say that "It makes the road look terrible". I have told her that there is nothing i can do about it as I feel that it is none of my business whether the lady living in our old house opens her curtains or not.

My old neighbour mentions this "Issue" every few months. Although I don't want to fall out with her, surely she is completely unreasonable in moaning about our tenant's behaviour?

Tell your neighbour to get a grip

LadyStarkOfWinterfell · 22/06/2016 23:06

Yes, she's an idiot. Don't entertain this nonsense.

Friendofsadgirl · 22/06/2016 23:06

SIBU. MIL never opens her blinds because of her nosy neighbour. Maybe your old neighbour just wants to be nosy too.

Lurkedforever1 · 22/06/2016 23:07

Tell her it's because the tenant is a vampire, but not to worry as you put a clause in the contract specifying that the tenant must only feed outside the mile radius from the street.

x2boys · 22/06/2016 23:07

I dont have curtains i have blinds but they are often shut i like the privacy non of your ex neighbours buissness.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 22/06/2016 23:09

Sod her. She needs a better hobby.

MrsKoala · 22/06/2016 23:09

Have you asked her what she expects you to do about it? If you do and she says 'tell them not to' you should explain the right to enjoyment of ones home without people with arbitrary standards imposing them on you.

Tell her it's funny as you've had complaints from the tenants that she keeps her curtains open and her collection of princess Diana plates from the back of the daily express is making them want to vomit.

Backingvocals · 22/06/2016 23:10

tell her to pull herself together Grin

ShatnersBassoon · 22/06/2016 23:10

Tell her that you mentioned it to the tenant, who said she keeps them shut because of the nosy neighbour who is always watching the house.

99GBPChargeToUseMyPostsJournos · 22/06/2016 23:10

Tell the neighbour that your tenant has had trouble with nosy neighbours peeking in the window, so prefers her curtains shut.

VimFuego101 · 22/06/2016 23:10

Shatner Grin

99GBPChargeToUseMyPostsJournos · 22/06/2016 23:11

cross post!!

Fairylea · 22/06/2016 23:11

She's being ridiculous. We never open our front curtains on one side as we actually use that room as storage for our computer etc and we don't want it visible from the street so we keep it shut. Never bothered me or occurred to me to wonder what the neighbours think!

mynamesnotMa · 22/06/2016 23:11

It's the bloody twilight zone.
Your neighbour sounds bat shit.

paxillin · 22/06/2016 23:13

Tell her the tenant is a naturist.

TheUnsullied · 22/06/2016 23:14

Tell her that the curtains being shut isn't a problem. Be firm.

My flat is a bit of a fishbowl...the living room is my biggest room by far with a large window that the whole street has an unobstructed view of. I don't want to be watched so often have my blinds shut. If my landlord said they'd had complaints I'd laugh an awful lot.

thrillhouse · 22/06/2016 23:15

Yup. Totally unreasonable of her.

Just tell her you don't care?

FuzzyOwl · 22/06/2016 23:19

Your tenant probably got fed up with a nosy neighbour peering in! SIBU.

MrsJayy · 22/06/2016 23:20

Just say oh does she every time neighbour mentions it daft bat people really have nothing else to worry about

MrsJayy · 22/06/2016 23:22

My living room window is huge i keep my curtains closed till im dressed if im having a naff day it could be mid day

Pinkheart5915 · 22/06/2016 23:24

How odd, I don't really see what she wants you to do about it Confused

Is it a house with no front garden so people can see straight in? If so I probably wouldn't open my curtains either although I admit that probably makes me strange

I am a landlady and I can't imagine having a conversation with a tenant about keeping curtains closed.

I'd be interested to know if she bugs your tenant about this too.

I agree, none of your business or the neighbour's.

nocoolnamesleft · 22/06/2016 23:39
