to not wash my hands BEFORE going to the loo?

Another thread title just reminded me of a little discussion I had with my DH a while back.

He insists that it doesn't make sense for females to only wash their hands after going to the toilet. They should wash them before too. This is, according to him, as we will be transferring germs to our lady bits if we don't wash our hands before. I did point out that most of us use toilet paper so we don't actually come into contact with our bits. His response to that was why do I bother washing my hands afterwards then? I had to think for a bit and then concluded that
a, it's habit
b, who knows who else has/hasn't been touching their bits/not washing their hands
c, occasionally the paper isn't quite thick enough and a feeling of dampness seeps through. bleurgh.

Note: this only applies to females apparently. Men don't touch the 'important bit' of their apparatus when they wee. Obviously if they do a no.2, the same applies as above.

So, am I a disgusting unclean person, or is he being unreasonable?

I wash my hands before if going to change a tampon.

Otherwise no, why would you?!

He's wrong. Vaginas are self cleansing. Stuff flows out not in. Mucus is a great germ barrier.

To remove any stray splashings of piss and shit that might have transferred to the wiping hand obviously.

Nope, never occurred to me to wash hands before. Unless I've just been elbow deep in the garden and am wearing my white jeans or something ... Otherwise it's a bit pointless.

OOh thank you, Simon I'll throw that in next time it comes up, and it will come up again! That should really ick him out :)

Jacques I use the applicator ones, otherwise, yes I would too.

I worked with a doctor from South Africa - he told me he got into the habit of washing his hands before he went when he worked itheren a hospital there and struggled to stop himself doing it in the UK so I guess he saw the point to it.

I currently live in a country with very high rates of hepatitis and even though I'm vaccinated against type B (and A) I still sometimes like to wash my hands before I go! Wouldn't be too fussed in the UK though. And I'm possibly the most obsessive handwasher ever.

Tell him you don't wash your hands before masturbating as well, or ask him if he washes his hands before having a wank. Maybe ask if he washes his hands, or if you should start washing your hands before you touch each other.
Where would it end!

One of my friends says she never washes her hands after going to the toilet because she never touches herself, and only she uses the toilet so only her 'germs' are on the toilet handle?! Hmm Shock

Vile. I assume you mean that she thinks she doesn't touch poo when wiping afterwards? She should probably google that.

My midwife told me last week to wash my hands before and after loo whilst pregnant. Maybe it's a thing now. Must admit I haven't taken any notice Blush

I'm a midwife. I tell women after giving birth to wash their hands before going to the loo as they may introduce germs to grazes/tears.....but I can't see the benefit of needing to do it while pregnant.

The advise in postnatal wards is to wash your hands before you go to the toilet. I guess because you're so open to infection after you give birth.

The toilets in the postnatal ward I was on were absolutely filthy so I scrubbed myself repeatedly! And used a lot of baby wipes.

But I wouldn't normally wash my hands before using the toilet, unless I knew I'd been doing something germy like emptying bins etc.

Unless you've been elbow deep in shit or chopped up chilli beforehand, no need to wash your hands before you use the loo! I only wash them after. (and very well too in public loos!)

I wash them after going to be toilet.

Washing them before as well, unless they were particularly mucky, would seem like overkill to me.

You know what I hate about public loos?

Washing hands...and then having to PULL the main door open afterwards when god only knows how many people haven't bothered washing their hands.

Why don't the main doors PUSH outwards from the general toilets area?

And yes I know trolley handles etc full of germs but for some reason this really irritates me Blush

I always pull the door open with the bottom of my t-shirt or my sleeve!

MrJolly, I think the answer is to put on surgical gloves before approaching public toilets and only remove them when safely out of all doors Grin

I don't think my pelvic floor would allow me the time to wash my hands before going to the loo!

soggy I do that too...although this is only confined to toilet doors...I pulled the outside door open at Prezzo with my naked hand the other day, never thought anything of it Shock

starfish I think I might just wear them at all times, all bases covered, job done Grin

Yes Apple, that's right. She says she doesn't get poo or wee on her when she wipes, so why does she need to wash her hands afterwards?!?
