AIBU to think this petition is wrong

I've just had a petition shared on my FB in favour of the Government cancelling the planned referendum. I am presuming in light of the tragic murder of Jo Cox. It has about 4000 signatures.

I realise that these petitions can be made for anything and that it will probably not gain enough signatures for a debate in Parliament, but AIBU to think it's a bit wrong to be advocating that this vote be taken away from the public?

YANBU, but it's incredibly unlikely that anything will come of it.

Yanbu, tbh I don't even get the thinking behind it.

She was a politician! I know I can't speak for her (though many seem to think they can) but surely she wouldn't want the vote cancelled? She was passionate about the Remain side.

I also don't approve of another Labour councillor being given her seat without a vote. For all we know, someone from another party may fall more in line with her views and what the local population want.

And I don't understand people who say they will vote Remain in her honour.

I'm horrified by this murder, but these things seem like the wrong approach to me - just too much. Ever since Diana we've indulged in competitive mourning, and it's continued to ramp up, and the tabloids delight in finding new details for people to pore over. Why did they feel the need to find the 'very last' picture of Jo Cox when she was alive, and make a headline of her last words? The obsessing is almost pornographic.

It is a very sad event and we all feel immense sympathy for her family but
I do not see that voting 'remain' if they want to vote 'leave' changes anything.

LaBelle I agree that there is a lot of competitive grieving around. I also think our culture of knowing EVERYTHING and knowing it now means society wants more information on everything, including death.

"Pornographic", though? How so? That would be a new angle. And even sadder, even if it's just as gratuitous.

Maybe my wording is wrong, I'm not feeling particularly articulate today. I mean the intense sudden obsessing over the murder victim, it does feel obscene.

It's an absurd petition and nothing will come of it.
