To be fed up with racist in-laws

Anyone else have these? They're quite nice people mostly, apart from the racism! Luckily it doesn't come up too often, but I've nearly chewed my tongue off for biting it! My husband tries to explain to them but they won't change. I hate to think of any rubbing off on my 5yo 😞

I would challenge them there is no way I would bite my tongue. And there is no way my child would be spending time with people that made racist remarks.

My grandparents can be very racist. I challenge it and it hasn't rubbed off on me. But YANBU. Racism should never be excused.

My granny is never racist but she has been a bit about my friend who is gay; says "what a shame" every time we talk about him! I do challenge her on it as she is a very intelligent and (otherwise) liberal lady who I think can take being challenged on this kind of thing. Also I challenge her when she makes comments about people's weight. I don't think age is an excuse for rude / homophobic / racist behaviour really. Different if someone has dementia or something which might effect their personalities, but I'm guessing this isn't the case with your ILs.

Maybe point out to your DH that if your DD repeats any of that sort of thing at school she'll be in trouble. If he says that to the PILs would they stop in front of her at least out of love for her (not great, but better than nothing)?

ILs are xenophobic rather than racist per se and very anti Muslim. We always challenge them on it and they know if they say these things in front of DS they won't be seeing DS anymore. Don't tolerate it!

I wonder what way, they'll be voting in the referendum....
