To think troll threads would get far fewer replies if deleted message showed in threads I'm watching

Have raised this before but never got a reply from mnhq... sometimes when a thread seems like a troll I'd love to see the outcome, just for interests sake and to check my trolldar, but unless you actually post on the thread it just disappears from your watching list and you're none the wiser. I reckon half the responses on some dodgy threads are purely place marking for this reason! But this just feeds the trolls... any reason why deleted thread messages can't show up in threads I'm watching?

The other alternative - which I would support - is for the moderators simply to delete the thread without explanation.

eatsleepfeedrepeat · 16/06/2016 09:21

But wouldn't that lead to dozens of "what happened to" threads, just giving the trolls more air?

They are TAATs, are against the rules, and should be deleted immediately.

eatsleepfeedrepeat · 16/06/2016 18:28

Ok... but I'm sure I'm not the only one curious when threads go puff!

If threads disappear then the mods deemed them to be troll threads. What else do you need to know? Every post-mortem is just more troll food.

Essentialy I think the moderation of this site is really good and we should trust the mods.

acasual sometimes threads get deleted for other reasons than trolls

Queenbean · 16/06/2016 23:41

I've suggested a ghost post which is a place mark that others can't see

Can also be used on "I'm going out in 6 hours and will report back then" with "please come back op!!!"

Fair point. Nevertheless, as I've said, I'm prepared to trust the mods - if the thread 404s then there's a good reason. I don't necessarily need to know what it is.

SmellyTelly · 17/06/2016 00:51

why are threads about threads against the rules? I always wondered that.

beetroot2 · 17/06/2016 00:56

I recon if I were on the other side of mumsnet and had to keep wading in every 5 mins I'd make them go "poof" too. I'd probably do it after 3 alerts, I think they're far more tolerant that I. How do you propose that they tell you and "outcome" ? Im sure they have better things to do.

eatsleepfeedrepeat · 17/06/2016 11:19

Beetroot, if you've posted on a thread you get a deleted message, explaining the reason the thread has gone. If you're just watching a thread it just disappears from your list, hence all the place marking messages on contentious threads.

Yes I think you're right. Posters don't even pretend anymore, they type "marking place" !

Or a smiley Wink

Sparklingbrook · 17/06/2016 23:26

I have never really been that involved in a thread that if it went poof I would be fussed to find out why. There are very few possibilities after all. But once it's gone it's gone as far as i am concerned.

Queenbean · 17/06/2016 23:58

There are some RIGHT troll dickheads about tonight. Wish they would fuck right off
