JustGiving to Millionaires?

I've just been told IABU and a bit uptight about this so I'm interested to see if I'm the only one who thinks this is out of order.

I've just been sent a Justgiving request on FB which has been widely shared in my area and beyond. It's a request from a local family to raise £3k so that their family dog can get a life saving/prolonging operation. So far they've raised £360 and clearly people who don't have much money but love animals have given £10 or £20 to help out. I know a couple of the contributors as patients and I know they don't have money to spare.

All well and good but I know this family and they have three children in expensive public schools, horses and a property worth well over £1m with an attached cottage rented out at a rate that would cover the vets fees in under a month. Oh, and an attitude towards 'the little people' that isn't very nice (the 'little people' being exactly the kind of people who are generously contributing what they can).

Shouldn't they pick up their own tab at the vets😡 Or am I BU?!

I wouldn't be contributing. They should have their pet insured.

Either way, it does sound a bit cheeky but I dont agree that the people who contributed, couldn't afford to necessarily.

In my book, if you keep a dog you have an obligation look after it, paying the bills yourself. Asking people to crowdfund treatment is arrogant and cheap. Of course they can afford it. Are these people your friends?

I wouldnt be giving money for a dogs operation im not heartless just not something i would but just giving is public fund raising i guess they are just chancing it

I was coming on to say if it was for a charity then I'd give. people gave to my DH when he raised money for sands by cycling Paris to Lyon ever though we are far from short of money.

Now I've read your post YANBU they are not short of money and want donations for vets bills, cheeky sods! I wouldn't be donating.

YANBU. People who can afford things they dont need should have pet health insurance. I get sick of these requests.

YADNU - they can clearly afford the drugs themselves - or to have gotten insurance - to be honest seems a slightly ridiculous thing to have a just giving page for

Seems like they are either mean or they are living beyond their means then expect people who don't to pick up the tab when something comes up

I definitely wouldn't contribute to something like this, and YANBU to think they shouldn't be asking for donations given how well-off they are - but I guess the people donating can make up their own minds about whether or not they think it's worthwhile.

You're right those you who say people don't have to contribute and can choose to take these things at face value. I guess it's the pictures of their beautiful dog looking vulnerable and subdued and the paragraph saying 'we don't have the money right now and if we don't raise this cash she'll be needlessly put down'. This pisses me off. My grandad was trying to donate to something similar.

I also know a man who is a millionaire who is trying to raise £2000 so his Dd can attend some sporting events this year. She is very talented in her chosen sport. But they can easily afford the fees themselves.

The dad gets pissed off that the club holds fundraising to help a couple of kids that come from a family who are very poor due to their mum being severely disabled. He thinks it's 'unfair'.

People have such a brass neck don't they? I wouldn't be giving. I know someone who rescues animals, which is lovely and good for her. But then she has pages where she asks people to donate to pay for the cat's vet fees and the pig's care. People send gifts and food for the animals all the time. Which is fine. But then this person owns several businesses, has a huge house with fancy cars, landscaped gardens and recently had a posh wedding. I would not be sending her any money for the pets she chooses to take on, but I don't understand why any one else would want to either. I think that it's more than a bit cheeky for her to ask strangers to send her money.

Crowdfunding should be banned. It put pressure on people to give and is just and electronic version on these chuggers that hang around on street corners.

3k rent in under a month? In general, YANBU. I am sick of JustGiving requests for cars, tattooas, holidays, vet bills etc.
