turning MN posts into news articles

Is anyone else bothered that these topics, threads and quotes end up in news articles ( Daily Mail online)?

I treat this place as a confidential sounding board that my other half won't see but once these threads are published, even with usernames, our identities could be revealed.

Its the tinternet not a safe space. I agree its lazy journalism (what do you expect from the DM?) But ultimately its your responsibility not to give away too much of yourself on a place that's permanent and global.

No it don't bother me as if my identity as revealed I don't have anything to hide. I don't post moaning about friends, family or work as I don't ever want it to come back to bite me on the bum!! It's not confidential, It's a public forum and they can legally cite what anyone writes here. If you think what you're writing is identifiable enough that if printed people would recognise you then it's best not to post if it would be a problem.

MN thrives on DM headlines, there must be two or three threads started every day with a link to a DM story. It's a true love hate relationship

dont want your story out there? talk to a priest or a counselor where you can expect confidentiality, dont post on an open forum on the internet

Anything posted on MN is in the public domain. Either restrict what you post to what you would be happy to wear printed on a tshirt, or zealously protect your identity and name change regularly.

I don't like it. Yes it's public etc but some people need support and this could be a lifeline. Penis beaker is one thing, but remember the woman who ended up in the DM after posting about losing her little boy? I feel sad for anyone who avoids reaching out for fear of that kind of exposure.

I don't like it either, so I just don't start any threads. It hasn't put me off commenting, but yeah... RupertPupkin knows what's up. I don't think it was ok for the DM to put that thread on their site.

Op have you missed the million threads like this asking the same question?

When you sign up for MN membership there's a whole load of information telling you that you are giving MN the right to do this with anything you post.

What don't you understand about that?

There have been loads of threads about this. Don't want your posts quoted in the DM etc then don't post. Simple.

Sorry, didn't realise this had been posted before. I took a break from MN because this very topic was bothering me. I agree that anything online is in the public domain but some things I don't want to talk about in real life so I enjoyed the anonymity but honesty of MN. Thanks for your replies.

I think its incredibly poor journalism, so very lazy - but then when you look at the papers that do it, I'm not sure why the surprise really, their online content is almost exclusively pap and 'filler'.

It doesn't overly bother me though that someone might reprint something I have said, but then I have been a forum user/ web-admin/social media user for a LONG time and understand perfectly anything I publish online is there for all to see and if I publish it via someone elses platform, they can do with it what they want.

I got quoted in the Daily Fail years ago, in topic they had scraped off Facebook, and that had my real name on it - still unbothered (well apart from my real name being in that rag, there aren't many people with my name around, particularly on that particular subject).

Tis the way of the world and evidently enough people want to read and don't feel any need to complain about their concept of 'news' being 'something I read whilst lurking on a forum', that it remains worth doing.

Maybe if newspapers stopped relying on unpaid inexperienced interns and starting employing proper journalists we might get back to some decent quality reporting.
